    steering UJ

can anyone identify this steering joint for me please?
Decided to find out why the steering on my Pop was notchy & found the insides of this rather rough.
Hopefully I can rebuild or get a new one once identified
    Thanks

Not neccesarily your problem. How many ujs do you have in th set up? Are they phased correctly and do you have a picture of it all set up?

looks like a disassemble, grease and rebuild would help no end with that one at least.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

I have cleaned it for the pics it was full of grease & will be when I put it back together. The column has this fixed to it, then a shaft to a normal UJ which is fixed to the steering rack
The inside surfaces of the item in the pic are pretty shot so this needs replacing.

As said, phasing of the UJs are your problem almost certainly. Your "in" and "out" must be absolutely parallel. There are really good demo vids on YouTube about this.

I understand about phasing UJ's but this isnt a UJ & its buggered anyway so need to know what it is so I can start looking for a new one. It also looks like this gives a small amount of lateral movement like a sliding joint so ideally I am looking for a like for like replacement.

It's so long since I've seen one of them I can't remember what it was on.

It looks suspiciously like a gearing unit to assist with heavy steering without having to have pas. The column turns the gearing inside the unit which turns the outer body at a different rate. The rack clamp is fitted to the outer body independent of the top part of the column.

    A work in progress....

Its not a reduction gear. Input to output is 1:1 Its just a bar with the 2 nylon wheels on that turn inside the housing like a CV joint. I will post some more pics when I get home later.

This shows more detail. The splined clamp attaches to the column then the output shaft goes down to a normal UJ on the rack.

I just need to identify it so I can go looking for a replacement.
