    Tail light mods

Has anyone got any ideas as to how to take apart GM tail light assy without breaking it? they appear to be a welded join. Light is off C3 '81 Corvette

I want to fit something like these into the unit and glue back together

Basically I want it to look something like this, but retaining stock lenses

They are ,possibly cut the rear out the dia of the new unit then glue.Pack the inside the unit so as not to damage the lens when breaking through with cutter.

This may work, put the rear light into a saucepan of boiling water with some tin foil on the bottom for the lens to sit on. Get it really boiling and then very GENTLY prise the lens apart from its backing, this should work if the lens is bonded to the backing. The heat from the water should soften the bonding. You may have to boil it up a few times. Do your led mods and then bond the lens back on with sikaflex or tiger seal.

I have done a few BMW 3 series headlights this way that have glass lenses bonded to plastic backings.
Get a haircut and get a real job.

paul67, I don't really want to cut the back out as It makes life easier with all the locating legs left in place.

petespops, That's worth a try but I think the two parts are plastic welded together- I'll let you know how I get on.

    Thanks for the replies.
