I want to fit a modern turbo diesel to my 40's Chevy to use as a tow car/parts chaser.
I know nothing about oil burners except the 1700 non turbo cavalier I drove a few years ago was the slowest thing I ever tried.
I am thinking BMW 525, Volvo 740 2.5L, or Merc. Doners seem to all about £500 to £800.
Which would be the best choice from power, efficiency, noise, complexity points of view.
I have worked with ECU powered rods before so as long as the electrics are not too complex I am not too worried.
Your thoughts please.
heard head gasket woes re the volvo diesels.
for a truck I'd go for a modern transit TD lump, availability will be better and cheaper for spares
It is a Coupe which is why I was thinking a car based one as I expected it to be quieter.
well modern diesels from the limited experience I've had are getting more complicated all the time. Lift pumps coded to ECU's, common rail injecton, intercooled turbo's etc. Whatever you go for the turbos make all the difference. They make up for the lack of oomph from pull away and really come into their own on the m'way. Without most diesels are are just sluggish
Vauxhall Omega, 2.5D, is a BMW diesel, and buying it in a Omega, dosent normally attract a premium
I drive a BMW 525 tds touring as a daily and very useful parts hauler .It is reliable ,smooth ,economical 40 mpg real world and very civilized for a diesel .Can be relatively fast if driven in sport mode [auto ].They also do performance chip upgrades but I have not used them so can't comment .But I know these 525 engines are good for 300K miles with proper servicing .I would use one in a truck .
Had 2 Isuzu pickups from new, current one is the 3.1td. It'll pull away in third and pull like a train from about 20mph in top. Oil and filter every 6000, cambelt every 60,000, thats it. Always thought diesels were a joke before I had one, now, for a daily, I'd never buy anything else.....
if it was me id buy either bmw ( or omega which is the same as mentioned but cheaper) or mercedes 300 turbo diesel, you can get a full merc on ebay for about £800-£1000 take off what u need and sell the rest to a merc breaker or back on ebay for around £300-400. saves buying just an engine etc and looking for bits in the scrappy
i have an isuzu rodeo 2.5td , in 07 prodrive did a chipped version, 170bhp, pulls real well and with the chip turned on is something else, would be ideal for a rod.
