I'd throw in a Cummins 6BT. Its an easy swap if you are using a modern transmission, and way more reliable than any of the others mentioned.

Try Howe Bridge Salvage, they have a good selection of late RWD diesels and any accillaries needed to go with the conversion, Tony or Mick, can arrange delivery,

Be aware that Vauxhall modified something on the BMW engine for the Omega (something to do with either oil filtration or supply, sorry for being vague!!!) which lead to premature bearing failure. This was the reason that BMW stopped supplying Vauxhall with the engines in 1999 and forced Vauxhall to quickly fit the asthmatic 2.0 diesel from the Vectra for a short while.

The above isn't an "a man in the pub told me" story, my next door neighbour runs a BMW garage & he told me, so it is fairly credible. Obviously there are still Omega's around with the BMW engine so they can't be all bad, but it would be worth doing some research on one before buying it.

Thanks for your thoughts. Preference would be for BMW or Merc, I need to get mor info about the electronics, I was aware of the pump to ECU coding but I am not sure of the year it becomes an issue.

    Cheers

    How about one of these?

SSANGYONG MUSSO on eBay (end time 02-Feb-11 18:27:28 GMT)

Cheap way to get a pre common rail (CDI) Sprinter engine.

Christ! dont even think about the volvo 740 / 940 diesel. Its the old VW LT van engine - a real rattlebucket of the old school. About 100hp, and nearly as fast as a bottom-of-the-range 2L volvo petrol engine - ie. not at all!

Robford on here has a Merc 300e 6 pot in one of his classics and i think there was very lil wiring to worry about

Toyota do a v8 (not sure in what or if in the UK) but from experience the toyota 2.2 3ct/e suffer with head cracking between valves but they do mount under the the front seats and lay almost on there side (in the picnic they are upright) but are extremely good lumps and pull real well up to about 90 and when the motor is loaded (full to the brim and with a caravan on the back also loaded ) you dont know the weight is there so id say there were torque monsters

BUT because of the heads cracking you can normally get complete cars CHEAP and youll get everything you would need so if you budget for the replacement head could be cost effective I paid £150 for mine and £250 for a head on a car that will still sell for £1500 once done (and ive sat on it for 2yrs
