Iv`e used an omega 2.5 td in my truck. This has been very reliable and quiet compared to the transit lump.If you need any help with ecu please get in touch, the wiring diagrams are knocking about somewhere.

The 5-pot went into the 850. Dont think the 940 ever got it.

Iv`e also used an omega engine, box, propshaft and rear axle in a 54 chevy pickup. If you are going to use an omega dont go for the automatic, its got its own ecu for the box.

The 940 was the last volvo RWD. The 850 the first FWD.
The guys on the Volvo forum just confirmed they never put the 5 cyl 2.5L in the 940.
Interesting that the 5 cyl bolts up to a RWD gearbox.

So Rich, have you made any decisions based on your investigations as I'm still sort of considering a diesel for my truck?

Summary so far no decision made yet Steve. Please add comments as you feel guys.

Volvo 740 - Considered as the axle could also be used. Consensus is too much noise and crude. 840 is a good engine but will still need a box as they are FWD.

BMW 525 - pre 96 simpler but not as fuel efficient as expected. post 96 Fuel efficient but has ECU coded pump not a problem if you use single doner.

Merc 300 250 - Turbo engines are not so common in the affordable doners and it seems that most are Auto, not a problem if straight forward but I still do not know how much electrics/ecu to the box.

Transit - Cheap and simple but just not for me.

Far Eastern - still do not know much about suitable doners at sub £800 so an unknown

VW/Audi I would like more info on RWD conversion as they are a very good engine.

My likely choice is a post 96 TDS 525 BMW, I am on the lookout for a suitable manual one but will not dismiss a Merc at the right price.

No rush though as I am still trying to get the A sedan built for wheels day.

    Rich

P.S a brief build thread fitting a BMW to a Scimitar in case you have not seen it on Retro rides

    Thanks Rich

    Just found this

    https://www.rodsnsods.co.uk/forum/tec...el-drive-26819

And, according to Wikipedia (I know...) the Volvo 960 diesel used between '90 - '93 was the VW 2.4L D24TIC Turbodiesel I6 so the the Volvo M90 5 speed might just mate up to the VAG diesels as well???

My daily is a 98 E300TD Merc and it pulls very well indeed with 180hp and returns average 30mpg. I have disabled the egr with a tip found on the MB owners forum (it makes the ecu think it is operating as normal) which stops so much crud going back in the engine and from what I am lead to believe increases power/mpg. Add to this and the fact I run it on veggy oil (25% winter 40% summer) and I am chuffed to bits with it
