    timing 302 ford

    i have a car im doing.

    engine we think was out of a late ish mustang with fuel injection.(now on carb)

    ive found what looks like a timing thingy on the engine,but it has a hole in it,not a pointer.

    i have another 302 here,so its in the right place.

    problem is my 302 has the water pump outlet on the opposite side to the pointer.

    this one has it on the same side,so the rad hose would cover it up when it came to timing it.do i time it with no hose on ,or have i done my normal,and over looked something basic

    There is two types of pump,Im sure the later ones exits on the right.

    Had this on my mates Cougar last year but it was all on the left side also covered by the hose, managed to get in to time it up with a gun but its a struggle, then set it up properly on/after a road test
    Most street engines are best set up by listening, "response of the throttle" and performance/driveability , but you have to have some idea what to do

    thanks.problem with swapping pumps,is the cars set up for the outlet being on the side it is.no room to swap over now.

    i can prob run it up without the front on the car,so maybe be able to get a timing light in at n angle

    Just put a new fixed pointer plus mark the pulley where you can get to it?

    You can buy timing tape like this to put onto the pulley and do as kapri says put a new fixed pointer.

    There are various types of pointers and different markings on harmonic balancers on 302's. If you believe the markings on the one on my Ranchero the timing should be about 100 degrees out!

    Like English Impala says the parts from early cars fit later cars. The only way to be sure is nip No1 plug out and put a cable tie or screw driver down the plug hole to feel the piston coming to TDC ( don't get it stuck !!! ), if you've got the inlet manifold off you can look down the No1 inlet port otherwise you need to take the RH valve cover off watching the inlet rocker closing just to make 100% sure you're on firing No1. Once you are you can put the timing mark where you want on the crank pulley and your new pointer. Pete.
