    tri chevy v8 sump question

    hi
i have recently got a 55 chevy v8 car. The sump is damaged and needs replacing. my car has the original 265 v8 engine on manual gearbox.
Does anybody know if a later 350 v8 sump from something else will fit my engine and if it does if it will fit in my car without fowling anything?
    any advice greatly appreciated.

There is an issue with an original '55 265 engine. It doesn't have an oil filter pad down on the left of the block and this makes the sump unique to that engine On cars with the oil filter pad many will fit. You need a sump where the deep part at the rear, the well, is about 7" long. This will allow clearance for the steering gear at full lock as the extremities of the drag link move in towards the well edges. My own well is longer than that and has restricted that movement before the link hits the sump so I have put adjustable lock stops in place. To be honest it is still fine on the street though even with that slight loss.
Can you not get your sump repaired? After all it would only be cut and weld as long as the pan rail is ok?

    Hi
Thanks for your response. Ive only just got the car recently but as far as im aware it is the original 55 block in there so i was told. The sump plug thread has stripped inside the sump but it also has a dent right on the actual plug hole so it doesnt look too easy to tapp a new thread into it. Looks like i might have to try this first if they are unique and hard to find or get a new piece welded in if not.
    Thanks for the info

    Two good options:

1: Take it off and cut/weld a new section and plug in. Not too hard to get done.
2: Get to Brooklands on Sunday and see if any of the Tri Chevy owners there have a spare one!
