    Turbos

Conversation with the boy about turbos and superchargers, Usually happens after one of the Fast and Furious films has been on the box. Why cant I use a turbo off a deisel engine, and fit it to a petrol engine? I cant think for why, I know its suposed to be a silly idea, and most say you cant. But I need to know why you cant.
Somebody who knows enlighten me as to why please?
    Many thanks
    Martin.

I think......but sure someone will correct me if wrong....heat and speed, diesel turbos are built to run with less heat and generally don't spin as fast as the petrol designed ones....maybe!
i want cubic inches! lots of em!!

People do use them, probably not ideal but cheap.

Load of info here HomemadeTurbo - DIY Turbo Forum

From what I've read you need to get the correct size of turbo to match you engine/hp so this might be a catch.

Generally, They're designed to run as said at lower speeds and temperatures, it'll run out of puff too soon on a petrol engine.

Thta's what I've always heard quoted . Have to say my thinking is that it is no good using a 2000 diesel turbo on a 2000 petrol but if you look at cfm requiremenst at max revs on the diesel it'll probably flow enough for ( say) a 1600 petrol ? Haven't seen proof of that ut juts a thought .

There's loads of fiddly bits if what inlet /outlet A/R ratios etc to be considered if you want the absolute best performance . However if a lash up can make more power than an engine without one at all

I have an excel sheet that calculates the cfm, bmp, bhp, cr etc I'll dig it out and have a look at what it'll give you. Derv turbos tend to be smaller as you need quicker spool and less at higher revs. Kev, you're not far off the mark with your 2l on a 1600 tho

One more thing to be aware of, many Diesel turbos have different types of seals in the original factory build , these seals would not stand up to the greater vacuum on the inlet side in a petrol engine , Oil would be " pulled" through. And lots of smoke.Breakers yards are full of petrol turbos these days if you want to experiment, if you have no data on the Turbo s and you are experimenting , the best results are found by matching the turbo s by BHP ,

If its set up blowing thru the carb / throttle body, theres no vacuum to deal with.
