LightbulbTwin sprung thermostat weirdness - 350 SBC

    Howdy,

pulled the top of the engine to bits to have a poke around (more later).

Anyhoo, found a strange looking thermostat in there.
Never been into it before and had bought a new one in case it failed the pan of water test.

    new one on the left

They both opened at the same rate (180) although the bigger one made creaking noises as the mechanism expanded !?

It was slower to open and you could see scratches on the shaft thing.

I peered into the manifold I could see where the old one had extended so much that it
had been hitting the bottom and had very clear marks thru the discoloured metal base.
Dunno how much it was prevented from fully opening but may be part of a general running hot bug.
It's obviously a high tec bit of kit but not suited to a Performer manifold!

    cheers
    KJ

The Stat on the right is out of a much later engine not your SBC that has an internal radiator bypass system, as the Stat opens the flat disc on the bottom blanks the bypass diverting the coolant around the Rad.

    Hi,

thanks for the reply. Been out for a test drive today and stayed at 170 most of the time.

Although it did go past 200 when it got thrashed on the dyno.

    cheers

I would strongly recomend you confirm the coolant flow on the new manifold as running with a none bypass blanking stat will cause overheating if it should be fitted, better to confirm than bugger it up. Although if you have been on dyno it should have showed BUT I would confirm just to be sure. The idea of the bypass blanking stat is to ensure even engine warm up avoiding hot spots. It works by allowing coolant flow around the engine when stat is closed. when the stat opens the plate on the bottom blanks of the bypass and as Bully100E states send the coolant to the rad. A stat is never stationary and will constantly wonder so you need to ensure you have the right stat.
