    Types of column shifter?

    Hi guys
I've got a 57 3100 was looking to put a column shifter and 700R4 trans in it. Found a column in the states C10/20 pre 72 .It arrived today , I think what I have gone and bought is a manual column shifter Doh!!!!.I'm new to yank tanks and have no experience of auto trans or column shifters for that matter. Sould have done more research before buying stuff. It is loosly assembled and I suspect missing parts.

Anyone know of any online manuals r/Tech drawings of GM pre 72 column shifters?

I suspect its a manual as it has two brackets at the bottom of the column presumably for the pull push h pattern gear selection .I suspect the auto has only one as gear selection is in a linear manor .If that makes sense.

I can re engineer stuff if I can just figure out how its all supposed to work.
    Help!!!!!

    Rick

yes auto has 1 lever that swings round the column. you'll need a column from a later 4 speed auto truck or van or you won't be able to select 1st gear (earlier ones only had d, 2 and 1, so you'd get d, 3, and 2 in those positions).
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

I was hoping there would be a way to re engineer the column I bought ,by machining the gate or welding a longer leaver on the bottom of the column etc

Is the Auto gear selector permanently connected to the shift leaver or is there a disengaged position like the manual shifter?
Trying to work out if its feasible to modify what I have.

if you can add a stop so the gear lever only moves in an arc around the column and not up and down also then you should be able to use it. however it won't have a notched 'gate' arrangement like an auto one would so you'd have to rely on feel and counting the notches the box goes through to select gears.
