If you want a genuine 500hp from a SBC you'll be looking at changing gear at 7500rpm, that requires expensive parts. Huge valve spring pressures, hi compression and a BIG cam, this is more akin to a race engine.
400hp is more realistic with a SBC
Go with a stroker small block or a big block as you'll get that 500hp with much less expensive parts and a much smaller cam, it'll be easy to live with.

A c6 Z06 has a genuine 500hp and that car is fast as hell.

    Here's a good car craft article -

383 Stroker Small Block Chevy - Car Craft Magazine

Scroll down to the wild 570hp 383 (not really 570, US 570 on a dyno)

Personally i'd go with a supercharged LS1 or a Ford equivalent, or as above 460

The 460 with stroker kit seems a good option. Plenty of scope in case i decide to go further in the future. Doesnt seem too costly either tbh. Theres a cheap engine and gearbox going at the moment. With a C6 box...are they any good?

Go small block bud. Stroke it with a kit, heads cam and carb(S) headers and decent ignition will see a really usable 330 350 hp and you'll still get (almost) good gas mileage. Open the wallet further and pay more gas money... You know the score ..
If it aint broke...fix it til it is.....

If you ask ten different people here ,you will get 10 different answers, rule of thum if you have a big heavy car you need a big block -if you have a small light then car you need a big block !!!!! c6 with a few upgrades are ok to 850hp then think about a powerglide - rember if you are chasing 1000=hp then nearly everthing will be aftermarket so will be all about the same price what ever brand you use .

Whats your budget , that is going to be the most defining point ?

SBC chevy is probably the most economic way but for 450-500 hp you will be looking at Decent aftermarket heads , maybe stroker crank with matched pistons , Cam lifters , lifter rods . Decent inlet manifold , decent carb / efi system , you wont get change from £3-4 k by the time you factor in machine shop work and purchasing the core , And don't believe people who say they get 500hp from a small block with some hump heads and a cam , they are talking ****e ! you need to do it correctly and allot of that comes down to the machining and matching of the parts.

    cheers

    Lightbulb

Can of worms / tech question...

Used to watch the old CCSE dvd and it seemed, in my faded memory that big blocks always hunted down the little uns, further up the track.

Does that mean bb's really pull through the torque as they get going and the sb's are more lively off the line!?

    Just saying!

My stroked 383 sbc is instant on with its hopeful 400bhp/tq.

Is 0-60 or 1/4 the goal?
