    Vacuum advance

Noticed today that the dizzy on my Viva engined pop doesn't have the vacuum cannister connected to manifold vacuum. I'm not sure of a good reason to do this for street driving, so am highly tempted to check the timing, hook it back up, and recheck. It runs a little rich anyway so I need to tweak the carb (Stromberg CD)

Do most people with rods run vacuum advance on the street? I'm far more at home with a Magneto on the strip.

Vacuum advance is essential for fuel economy, no street driven car should be with out it.

Unless of course it's been disconnected for a reason, like a torn diaphragm capsule

If it has a canister then it should be plumbed, if not then you have a mechanicaly advanced distributor...

Oh it's got a cannister, just not plumbed in. Need to check if it's been locked out or just left disconnected - I suspect at some point a feed was needed for the servo when fitted so the vacuum advance line was borrowed. Hopefully that's it anyway.

Not exactly. All distributors have mechanical advance, most have vacuum advance as well. While the mechanical advance is crucial to correct engine performance the vacuum advance only improves fuel consumption and even that is dependant on how you drive.

Given I'm aiming for daily driver there will be a fair bit of part throttle usage, and more miles on a tank would be good
