    Vauxhall Cresta fuel starvation

Got probs with fuel starvation on my PB Cresta runs ok on A roads with short bursts upto 90 but on M way at constant 80-90 it runs out of fuel.
I had exactly the same probs with my PA years ago with a range of engines over the years.
The tank is clean , Ive had it out , looked inside got no rust in there , steam cleaned it out , the breather is clear so its not vacuuming . when it cuts out I have to wait for the fuel to fill the glass bowl on the pump.
I have put a inline filter between the tank and the pump, its a Fram filter with paper type element, could it be collapsing under suction and restricting the flow? if so whats the best hi flow filters to use.
    any suggestions welcome.

    Cheers Dave

when it runs out have you tried immediately removing the fuel cap to see if there is any vacuum? i know you said the breather is clear but its an easy check. next is the fuel pump good, even a new old stock can be bad. easiest check is temporarily fit an electric one and try it. lastly if the tank is as clean as you say and the pump has a glass bowl sediment filter/collector anyway then bypass the fram filter to check it's not restricting flow. good luck.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

I think its the fuel filter position that's the problem. Fuel filters can cause pump cavitation if they are placed between the tank and pump, the correct place is after the pump so that the filter is under pressure (the same as the oil pump in the engine). Don't worry about particles entering the pump, it's the carb that won't like the bits clogging it up.

Thanks for the replies , I have run with the fuel cap open and it still does it, so I think you both have backed up my theory that the problem is the filter ie position and poss the type, will bypass it and give it a try if ok then relocate it.

    Thanks Dave
