VW Polo cat question ( rod related)

Some of you may have seen that I am fitting a 3 cylinder engine into a 300e and am about to fabricate the exhaust.

The cat is part of the exhaust manifold close to the head so it could meet the 2003 emissions requirements with just one cat.

There is a lambda sensor before and after the cat so the question is if I remove the cat what will the ECU do to the running as the readings will be the same before and after?

As I am not sure if I can include a management light yet I will not know if the system will go onto limp mode.

Anyone have any relevant experience or knowledge please?

It's a Renault story but may be helpful.....
My sister has a Megane which has pre and post cat lambdas. Check showed that one wasn't switching properly so was overfueling the motor causing it to bog.
After searching ebay for a cheap replacement the guy with the data checker thing said try undoing it and leave it to sort it out from the one reading.
That's what I did and it has run fine ever since....your VAG setup may differ.
