VW T4 2.4 Diesel engine locked

Tried to start my sons T4 diesel after its been parked up for 18 months and the engine locked, the cambelt is ok
turned the crank slowly backwards and it locked again so my reconing is a valve is stuck in the open position or a bore is full of diesel/oil/coolant, going to take out the glow plugs first
Anybody had any dealings on these its a 2.4 N/A 5 cylinder

    Thanks

    Dave

heads are prone to gaskets or cracking. fit a 2.5 turbo engine or a tdi-more reliable

Yup looks like head is cracked or gasket failed , pulled the heater plugs out turned engine over with socket on crank bolt rusty water came out of the bores so thats the end of that one
Strange as it was not overheating when parked and there`s still coolant in the header bottle
I will see what my son wants to do with it when he comes home , think the Volvo V70 has the 2.5 turbo in it they are around cheaper than VWs or engines from the breakers

    Thanks
    Dave

I always have volvo's, the D5 V70 is a nice motor and parts are cheap too. I paid £1700 for a 2002 with 150k, goes like stink, 50 mpg average and I had a new cambelt fitted (£200 ish) and they do suffer with the dashes dying (you can get them repaired for £120 - don't believe people when they say you can't) and the pipe degrades into the turbo and collapses (£50). They have a rep for splitting intercoolers but I've never had one go. Only down side is the insurance group. I've done 22k in mine since feb and love it

Now the glow plugs are out it'll spin over (messily) on the key to clear the bore. Put the glow plugs back in and fire it up. You've a 50/50 chance it will be ok, maybe just needing an occasional top up of coolant.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

Got it to turn over a complete revolution now with 4 heater plugs out , it feels like the valve that was open must have got rusty has its just touching the piston can`t get to the 5th glow plug out at moment its hidden behind the injector pump, going to squirt WD 40 in through heater plug holes and see if valve goes back as they are vertical so hopefully wont be bent
Got nothing to loose if it ****s up , I will keep my eye out for a cheap Volvo 2.5 TD5 engine or car to break

    Thanks

    Dave

Had a go again this morning now spinning freely , checked it had compression on all cyinders - all OK put the glow plugs back in (and beat me with a German sausage ) it fired up , ran fine no blue smoke from exhaust no bubbles in the header tank let it run for 1/2 hour , it came upto temperature with no issues at all
Now onto the next one in the garden
