    Water Temperature

Hellooo. On my Vauxhall Velox (straight 6, 3 speed manual) there wasn't a thermostat fitted when I got the car and I'm not too keen on running without so I fitted one. Well, 3 to be exact (one after another, not all at the same time) I know 2 of them were good ones. Anyway; what happens when I fit one is the gauge goes to hot (maximum) after a very short distance and stays there. 1/4 of a mile, if that. I know it can't boil over after the distance travelled but, I don't like it so I continue to run without one. I'd rather not so, any ideas as to why it should go to hot that quick?
P.S. When I run without one it stays just above the rest stop and stays there.

    Thanks nicely.

When you look at the rad is it different to most rads in that it has an X pattern to it and is solid to the touch ie covered in solder ?

I'm guessing it is as a 'film' block was standard on the Vauxhall range .

If so it will be choked solid and preventing full flow which is why the stat was left out.

Thanks Kev. That makes sense as to why the thermostat was left out now! Radiator off next job methinks.

Needs flow testing by a rad shop CANNOT be doe at home as not enough volume at pipe. Expect to have a modern core put in it for around £250-300 mark.

It's because the core will have to be custom made . If you had it done in original film block it would be nearer £700!!

Only other way is generic ali rad from ebay with the pipes hopefully in teh right place / size and then adapt to fit. £100 up

When I changed the thermostat in my PC Cresta the old one had a hole in the flange. When I got a new one it did not have a hole and the guy at the Factors where I got it from was a classic car guy and he advised me to put a same size hole in the new one as without one it can cause problems.

/\ That's about bleeding air bubbles from the system.
