I thought the whole point of hot rodding/ customizing/ car modification was to take any car and change it in whatever way works for you. Lets be fair you don't not rod an original '32 Ford because it an original '32 Ford. It's your car, if you've got idea's for it that will make it more 'yours' then go for it, you don't need the approval or permission of others to proceed!

Excuse me if i'm wrong, but i vaguely remember the street machine feature in the mid eighties?, am i right in thinking that this used to be "slick willy"? (i'm sure that was re-built as a street rod at a similar time to Ian building fatrat.

If it is, then building it how you want is surely another "evolution" of an iconic rod
As ha been said before, YOU own the car, therefore it's up to you if you want to change it (but if it is slick willy, a re-creation would be AWESOME)
I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE,AND SO DOES CHUCK!

Not sure what you are actually getting at. Slick Willy rolled a few times, Bob West sold it to Mick O'Donaghue who rebuilt it with a big block Chev as a street car, rather than with the Hemi, although when featured in Street Machine it did have the (legit I believe) plate HEM140. Fat Rat is a totally different car, both cars memorable for different reasons.

As has already been said, it's his car, his choice. Given the price of a steel Willys with that kind of provenance, I know what I would opt for but it ain't my choice.

It's your car, if you still like the Willys body style rebuild it as you want but if your tired of it sell it & try something different.
If you rebuild it in a different style it can be just as iconic, look at Marc Lamude's 55, I think it's a much better car now more radical & the style suits it more than if he'd kept it in the gasser style, as Martin Bonner built it when he owned it, another iconic car (sorry if I've upset gasser fans) which has moved on.
You can't please everyone so just please yourself.
Too much time on my hands. Too little money in my pocket

Yep, you jogged my memory, slick willy was re-built, and painted red.....it was about the same time that Ian built fatrat though !
