I've been told that lap belts are illegal in this country apart from a centre seat Jon.

Car builder solutions do lap belts but you would be advised to make some mounts and fit proper 3 point ones with a lap in the middle if you can't do anything else

excellent Chris and their site clarifies the laws as well, so lap belts are legal on Yanks up to 1972. They aren't a good idea but at least I know I wont have to change the lap belts when I do the first MOT on my '67 Mustang.

    Err, really ?

    Not according to MOT rules

    Flow chart https://www.mot-testing.service.gov....4s05000104.htm

    Requirements ABC https://www.mot-testing.service.gov....4s05000109.htm

I think they probably asked an MOT tester rather than looked it up. Testers often let illegal stuff go on Yanks because " It was like that from the factory "

It's easy enough to fit 3 point belts, I used Transit seat belts and put the top mount on the B post at shoulder level; mine has the big rear window.

I made the top mount from 4mm plate with a 10mm nut welded to the back and a small hole below this. Drill an 11mm hole in your chosen postion on the B post and a 4mm hole below this, attach some stiff wire through the small hole in your monting plate and thread it up the B pillar from below ( I dropped mine in from above as I was replacing the roof)

Carefully pick up the plate with a short 10mm bolt, nip this up to hold the plate in place and then plug weld your 4mm hole, this will hold the plate in place when you remove the mounting bolt.

I then cut 4mm plate to bridge diagonally between the B post and the rear wall, drill and slot this to take the reel mounting and weld to the floor, B post and rear cab wall. The other 2 mountings are simple but remember to use plates under the floor, I fixed these by plug welding as above.

    your flow chart says none?

"first used after 1965.....no, as its 1958......none"

which means it doesnt need seatbelts, but doesnt explain what would be a legal retro fit belt.
