    axle noise, what is it?

Hi, can anyone shed some light on a noise coming form my axle....

Axle is volvo 240 with a yukon grizzly locker, we ran the car at the HRD'S with no problems but 2 day while pushing the car around theres a kind of clicking noise coming from the diff that gets faster the faster you push the car. It clicks when going in a straight line, i know the characteristics of a locker are that it will click around corners but its doing it in a straight line.

Iv disconnected the prop to eliminate the gearbox and now have the car up on axle stands, if we turn the wheels by hand you can hear the noise easily, the faster the wheel is turned the click turns more in to a constant noise, i think im right in thinking that with both of the tyres off the ground and the prop disconnected the locker wouldn't make any noise at all, and the only noises could come from the cwp meshing or bearings?

The diff and bearings were new 9 runs ago and about 3 hours on a rolling road.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers Joe

HI, I think you will have to take it apart and have a look. Sounds like a chipped or broken tooth on pinion gear but could be anything,

Does it make the noise if you spin it backward ?

Thanks for the replies, iv got it out of the car now with the cover off, theres a small chip right on the edge of 1 of the teeth and the lash is .033" which i know is way to big, the tolerance in the manual is .004 to .008. the wear patten on the teeth look ok, do can anyone tell me if the noise is because the lash is too much?

    Cheers joe

I dont know what a yukon locker looks like but on my volvo axles the problem i had a couple of times was the pin holding the planetery gears in came loose. [It's about half inch thick and only held in by a hardened pin] when the hardened pin shears the pin holding the gears slides out but the crownwheel prevents it from coming all the way out-it does however give the pinion a good belt every revolution. After i destroyed five volvos i got an eight inch ford...dave.

The main question is why have the tolerances changed ?
And you know the answer is either
it went in at those set points or it has come loose some how
( sorry if this sounds harsh no offence ment )
race it cruise it just use it and abuse it

No mate not at all, i had the axle built up by someone else anyway!

I just took the diff assembly and pinion out, There are cracks in every tooth on the pinion just below the wear patten, ill try and get a picture.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape and caught it before the carnage of a blown diff
Could be a faulty part ?
