    DIY MSD ignition fix

I bought an MSD 6AL recently which was dead, These things seem to be uber sensitive to voltage spikes, bad connections, disconnecting them when the battery is still on the vehicle, which kills them.

After researching on the net, and taking the box apart, i found there is an internal fuse which dies at any sign of trouble.... most people think their box is dead and chuck it, or send it back to MSD to get charged for the repair (they tell you its not possible for somone other than their techinicans.... - which is ********, they just want your money (between $40-$80 for an easy repair)

It looks just like a diode, so doesnt jump out at you as a fuse. see pic..

Its the black one on the right of the thickest red wire.

You can replace it with a new one, or you can bypass it with a piece of wire, but i'll be modding this one to use a blade fuse, which can easily be seen/replaced.

Good thread. Take the box into maplins. You should always fit a diode inline to prevent back feeding via the alternator causing run on.
If the box is inside the car cut an access hole put a rubber grommet round it and have access to the fuse with the lid on. Saying that I've had loads of MSD boxes and never had an issue.

Mine runs on when the ignition is turned off. I've had to put a switch in the feed wire to the MSD. This has concerned me in case of problems at the track and the marshalls can't shut the motor off. Is there a simple remedy.
If it's got tits or tyres, its gonna be trouble

    Diode. It's back feeding.

I've got a dead one I'm sure has this problem, wouldn't mind having a crack at fixing it if you got Pt No's etc

This sounds like back feed from the alternator keeping the ignition circuit alive. If the alternators hooked to the starter cable this can happen. Feed the alt back to the battery?

Been to maplins, the guys had never seen a fuse like that before.... a bit of research, i found the manufacturer and info

    http://www.belfuse.com/pdfs/MQ.pdf

looks like it is just a fuse, no one way diode..... so can be replaced with a conventional 15A fuse...
