    Does anyone bother to...

...rolling road their vehicle when done ? Or do you just assume the promised power from the catalogues is there ?

Especially anyone with aftermarket air filters on efi?

I found 30 bhp on one of my Pinto efis by taking off the recommended air filter!! Efis do not like K&N style filter bolted on the end of the AFM / MAF .

On another I did I had to duplicate the air filter airbox to ensure there was enough space between the end of the MAF and where the filter box obstructed the flow to get it to work correctly.

I was just wondering how many of the fancy cast ali efi filters used on V8s had ever been rolling road tested rather than just presuming they'd work because they had the flow capacity?

Most filters I see on v8s look too small for the application.

Nope, but like lots, not really bothered by hp figures.

If I thought my car had 340 and it turned out to only have 300, I'm not sure by the way I drive,I'd ever know.

I don't think many people have anything checked once they build their cars.aftermarket front clips is a common one going by the amount of comments online saying they don't do anything

I did once take a car to a rolling road once.my conclusion was the bloke didn't really know what he was doing

I suppose you'd need a test n tune deal at the dyno to swap things around.

I got one of those K&N lid air filters and Real Steel said they do bugger all lol
I told em it was for a stroker and they said, mebbes.

I will be with my current build. Apart from setting the engine up to it’s optimum I’ll be using it to break in my new rear end gears. They need 30-40 miles on their first run and I’m not comfortable with that on a first run for a new build so I’ll run it on the rollers with an induced load to replicate road use. A much more controllable environment.

Definitely the bloke on the dyno needs to know what he's doing and most haven't a clue when it comes to carbs . Our nearest rr is run by efi blokes and does a couple of back to back power runs cheaply which shows enough info for me to go away and play .

I'm not looking for ultimate power just making sure it's working as should .

It's just that most seem to chose air filters by how they look as opposed to how they perform . Spend £20 too little and any other go faster bits simply can't work to full potential .

Suppliers generally don't seem to know about what they're selling either . In the 4 pot world of tuning seems that some are relying on past glories to sell the same old stuff..

Another case in point . Mate ran a V6 T , appeared to be quick enough on the road but the 1/4 times were terrible for the power to weight ratio . I kept accusing him of being afraid to put his foot into it.

Bit of time spent on an online calculator suggested a lack of around 100bhp !!

Inestigation ( paperclip on secondary rod ) revealed the brand new Holley had a tint lump of silicone caught in the vacuum port . This meant it was only using the first fixed chokes.

As Kapri says, I'm lucky enough to have a local RR guy who understands carbs and is happy to let me do a quick check now and then. He was also responsible for my signature...

I'd like to but dont know anywhere that deals with V8's & carbs.
Been told there is someone very good in Surrey but don't know his details.

I spent a fair bit of time tuning my carb but I know there is more to be had out of it as I still have a small hesitation from cruise to part throttle.
