I have bought a few parts from summit in america over the past months, which has generally gone OK.
Now, however, I am trying to buy an ignition set up from Daryl, at fastcoauto. For some bizarre reason, they wont take card payment, I'v had problems with paypal in the past, so dont have an account anymore, he wont take nochex, and weston union charge a fortune to send money abroad.
Come to think of it, they all charge a fortune to send money abroad.
I have also tried to buy various bits from Paul Fink at Race Mart, but again, for some reason my bank hates sending money to america, and they make it very difficult, so he wants paying by wiring the money to him....
All I want to do is pay for the goods on my credit/debit card, (by FAR the best conversion rate for both seller and buyer), get my goods, and be on my way, but it is seemingly impossible to buy anything off anyone except Summit.

Had that problem with speedway motors, seems they don't like taking credit cards on first payment, even refused paypal because the account wasn't registered in the states.
After a few more emails they relented and said they would take a debit car, but by the time they had taken to make up their minds it was to late I'd already bought what I wanted from Valley Gas.

Maybe the problem is because its such a large amount of money.
How about buying just a couple of small items first so you can get established, I'm sure that once that has gone through OK that they would then be happy to take a bigger order from you.....just an idea.
Saw a thread recently that was mentioning that many places would only ship within 48 states, so shipping outside of the USA is also a problem.
Just shop elsewhere, unless it's something a bit obscure where you have no choice I'd buy from someone else.
I often posted American Express cheques in US dollars to one or two suppliers in the States but haven't done it for years. You can get them over the counter at American Express.
I've also bought loads off ebay. Often they'll list as US shipping only, if you ask them politely and they can check your feedback more often than not they'll ship to the UK in my experience. I can't understand why a bank would be sniffy about wiring money, it's easy and they get paid for doing it.
Al
Open an account with the TSB bank they give you an American express card along with a master card, I cut my amexpress card up cos no fu*ker would accept it
cheers Ian
it's because of distance selling laws. The buyer can claim the goods never arrived, and get their money back. Seller gets stiffed and no way of proving it.
Summit used to get shitty about taking UK creidt cards and asked for ID and photocopies of the cards to be sent. You're better off calling them and trying to ring the order through instead of ordering online. The last resort should be a money transfer which should be easy with any decent bank.

Spot on, once you have had repetative dealings without hassle, some will revert to accepting Credit Cards.
I have never had an issue with Summit,JEGs on large credit card purchases. They initially questioned when I wanted the parts sent to a different address to the card holder, in fact they rang my mate up to verify. Since then, they have been great, send stuff to my hotels, etc.
You can do a wire transfer through your bank, which I have done in the past, costs around £40 for the express version. Which is a bit of a piss take really, but sometimes you have no option
Just to add some news on the progress... I have been trying for nearly 3 months to get these parts bought. Have arranged with Paul Fink at Race Mart in america to use my credit card to pay for the goods. For some reason my debit wouldn't work, but still, the credit did.
Payed for the stuff 2 weeks ago. He has had the parts delivered to him in his place, ready to go out to me. He has sent me copies of the receipts to show he has payed for delivery.
BUT....
Now he is asking for another $260!!!! He claims USPS are charging him more for the physical size of some of the parcels.
My argument is that he has already quoted for shipping. He shouldn't go back on his word.
Postage by air is charged based on one of two things. Either actual weight or what they call volumetric weight. Basically they have a chart where for a given weight they have a maximum size/volume. If your size exceeds this they go down the chart on the size column and charge you for the weight that in their opinion equals that volume. So.... If he got quotes based on given weights but the parts are in bigger boxes than need be then the freight will be more expensive. Boxes should always be as small as possible for air freight. One reason why shipping headers is a nightmare.
I recently had to price up a wartime coat being sent to Japan. It weighed 4kg but try as I might I couldn't pack it any tighter. The volumetric weight came to 4.8kg. That came to £90!!!
I recently bought something from the States that was so light you had to put a paperweight on the box to stop it floating away . Item was £10 , shipping was £30, as above, all down to volumetric shipping. They did tell me they could get another 4 of the same item in the box, for the same shipping, though.
I've used these in the past (oh, four or five years ago) when I bought something on eBay from a seller who wouldn't except anything but a cheque from a US bank...
Paul Fink, really has turned out to be a dirty dealer. I'll post more up at a later date on his dirty tricks, but in a nutshell, in the tiny print, on his website, he claims that from buying off him, you accept there is no warranty at all whatsoever, that you are giving him the right to unload money off your card after sale, and that if you disagree with him, he will not refund your money, even for goods he hasn't even sent yet. He also changes his terms and conditions on his website from time to time so you have no proof of what you agreed to when buying something.
I couldn't believe it when 3 different people in Visa said there was nothing they can do. He has basically scammed money off me, and the law appears to be on his side.
My one saving grace is that I have the screenshots of his terms of sale pages from when I bought the products, clearly showing them being different to the terms page now, apparently this might help me, but again, no guarantees.

If that is the case then please post the images up here as otherwise your claims are made without proof and won't be accepted on RnS.

That's strange cos i've just read the terms on his website (and it's hardly in 'tiny' print at all, it's very clear) and it states that any warranty that is offered by the manufacturer is passed on to the buyer. To be honest, this is pretty standard. Most stuff you buy carries the manufacturers warranty and not that of the place you purchase it (unless this is purchased separately).
Especially with racing parts I can't imagine many shops offering a guarantee with the parts other than that of it'll work based on you being able to order the right bits that you need. They have to remove themselves from responsibility due to the type of parts that they are.
The returns policy covers incorrect ordering and faulty parts as expected.
There is nothing that states that they will 'unload money off your card' after the sale or even implying that (other than to meet minimum order requirements as they put it "i.e. If we state that a spark plug part number is sold only in standard boxes of 10 and you order 16, we will automatically ship and bill you for 20.")
Their shipping policy states that the shipping amount is an estimate and that it is subject to adjustment based on actual shipping costs. This seems normal to me. After all, it's an estimate not a quote.
It doesn't say that they won't refund your money either. They have a returns policy that states their re-stocking charges. They state further down that you waive rights to chargebacks and reversals for any reason but this is just to cover them sending bits out and somebody forcing a chargeback to try and defraud them. That doesn't stop them refunding to your card, it might however prevent someone ordering parts abroad and then trying to scam a chargeback claiming non-delivery.
Actually, even better, I'll try and scan the letter from the bank I have just had.
They are now giving me a refund in full, for every penny.
I understand that race parts do not come with a warranty.
There are many parts of his terms page, that, according to the Visa dispute team (this is their words, not mine) "do not stand for anything in British law". For example, he puts that by ordering off him, you waive your chargeback rights. That, in British law, is not legal, full stop. You are not allowed to be a trader, who uses credit card payments, who waives chargeback rights.
By the way, this, as you put it, is not standard practice at all. The Visa disputes team say that this kind of practice is not fair on the half of the trader.
The problem has come that he has changed the website, since I used it. I managed to prove this, so the bank have now given me a refund, in full.
I will try and scan the letter from the bank, if you like.

i have been dealing with us companys for some25 years and summit and jegs i have had no problem, doing wire transfers now theres a thing i allways find theres some kind of delay and that delay is the banks making money with your hard erned and charging you for the it!!!!!!!.just done a wire transfer to a guy in the us and because its different to my regular ones he still has not got the money and his bank is saying my bank have not released the funds.i even get it transfering money from the uk to the us and thats from my uk account to my us account.when i bitch about it i just get a nice letter telling me how much my custom with them is valued.i have reached the point where i can do it on my credit card because it is faster.and money orders or "western union" at least dick turpin wore a mask and caried a gun
In reference to the british law part, the dealer must abide by the local laws of the countries he/she is selling in. If you are taking payment by credit/debit, you are automatically giving your buyer the rights that they are entitled too, from their card issuer.
This is why the nice lady on the phone, from Visa disputes, laughed, out loud, when she read the part about "waiving chargeback rights".
Look, I'm not going to go on and on about this forever.
I'v got my money back now, I'm happy, at last.
It was a massive amount of stress and hassle, though, and I thought I would be so kind as to post my experiences on here to prevent anyone else being caught up with the same person, not least because of his business practices, but also because he was so unbelievably unhelpful and unprofessional.
Just thought I would warn you, is all.
