the last mondeo estate i had was a 56 plate tdci ghia x, 130 hp with a 6 speed and all for £1,200. i drive.... shall we say enthusiastically and i couldn't get the average consumption (ghia so has a fuel computer) below 52 mpg. the tdci's get slagged for doing injectors and high pressure pumps but my 'injector guy' says 100-150,000 miles is about right for new control valves in the injectors. they bleed off too much diesel into the return line so the pump has to work harder to keep up. then when you put your foot down it can't so it goes into limp mode. i bought 4 new control valves off ebay for about £60 and fitted all 4 in under 1 1/2 hours. better economy as above and the idle smoothed out too. i wouldn't be afraid of getting another one. sorry to waffle on but just my experience.
    neil.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

I drive mine (same car 05 plate) like an old granny and I can't get better than 47-50mpg. Interesting what you say about the lumpy running, mine idles like a crock of **** although the only other problem I've got with it is the clutch slipping so I suppose that and the DMF will have to be changed soon.
