sup guys not posted on here in a while been overloaded at work.

got a few questions im hoping some folk can help me clear up.

im buying a 1965 mustang with a 3.2 straight 6 engine and im wanting to get it tuned to a nice balance between mpg and bhp.

im ideally looking for 25+mpg if possible and around 130bhp or as close to.

can you guys give me a few ideas that can help me out?

im thinking 1100 autolite Carb

freeflowing exhaust

Pertronix dizzy conversion or a HEI distibutor.

any other suggestions or alternatives would be great ill be trying to work within a tight budget to an extent. once i see aht the good option/ideas are i will work it all out ahaha!

Being realistic the L6 200 engine isnt going to give you what you want. Its ancient and heavy and poor design in a car thats heavy and not aero dynamic. Its also originally designed for 55mph speed limit driving and the axle is geared accordingly. Stock mpg seems to vary considerably but is in the region of 14-20. So making it 25% more efficient is a tall order I reckon. I'd plump for good ignition and an accurate tune up. The free flowing exhaust and the carb are just going to make it inhale more, whereas burning the mixture more effectively is not. Also modern style spark plugs might help for little cost. If money stretches then you mmight want to look at a different axle ratio thats better for motorway driving but you will loose on acceleration. Best mod would be an overdrive gearbox if its available for your engine block, I'm not familiar with the 6's.
Still petrols coming down fast and you'll soon be upgrading to a V8 and wont give a damn about the consumption ! LOL

I've a 200ci in an Econline. 20mpg with mismatched carb and Load a matic dizzy. Changed the dizzy for a DUI unit and 28mpg with no other mods, wasn't cheap though around £400 I think from memory. Also improved performance no end.

is this the same engine as an Aussie Ford Falcon? If so they do a lot of tuning on these "down under" and that might be a good place to start. As far as overdrive is concerned I think the early six pot mustangs used the Dagenham box same as mk3 Zodiac, early Scimtar and Transit (but I am not 100% sure) So overdrive box from an early Scimitar is a possibility but these are very rare (mk3 Zodiac only had overdrive on some column shift cars)

Essentially the same engine but the Australian stuff is expensive . There are a couple of places to look at, Clifford Performance and Classic Inlines for tech stuff on upgrading on any of the Us Ford 6s.

I have had a few 6 pot american cars and never had any performance issues apart from acceleration not being as rapid the a standing start as a V8. But well up to cruising at 70+

I looked at a 66 mustang and did a lot of research into the 200 L6. My conclusion was unless I wanted a numbers matching engine in the car I was much better off with a mild 302 & overdrive box for both performance & mileage. By the time I had spent on the 6 it would have been the same £ as the 8 with none of the obvious advantages.

cheers for all the replies guys. sorry i havent checked back sooner been busy at work and job hinting for something new!

by the sounds of things and bits ive been looking into im better with a v8.

after digging around consumption and economy is nice but everythings better with power! ahaha.... any tips for as much power as possible please?

Sometimes it can be simply about the less trodden path ;)

A mate has an oddfire Buick V6 in his T bucket , looks different, sounds different , it IS different :)

Classic inlines is the place to look U.S.E-bay has a couple of isky cam and lifter packages at around $250(then add postage and UK tax)
Northern auto parts do a couple of sealed power cams at $104 which seems very reasonable,I have just ordered a cam kit for my 144
