If I was to get a tow bar on my '65 Mustang how would I determine the maximum towing weight given there's no weight plates at all? Wikipedia suggests a kerb weight of 1400kg.
Manufacturers didn't have towing limits back then, BUT be aware that American towbars (trailer hitches) for "normal" family saloons are often only rated to 2000lbs (about 800kg) and are (at best) rather flimsy, being designed to bolt onto wherever is convenient, rather than where is strongest. Some of them simply clamp to the bumper. I'd get one made by a UK towbar specialist (Watling Towbars are good).

Thanks English Impala, good to know I hadn't been too stupid. I can manage the load of the current car/caravan quite easily as it's to go to a show with friends who can take some of my gear if I feel the weight might be exceeded.

The Mustang doesn't yet have a tow bar and I wouldn't trust the US ones even if they weren't always ugly. I did get as far as getting a quote from Watling Towbars and I think they're the best bet for me if I do ever go that route.

caravan clubs look at 85% of the kirb weight of car for maximum caravan weight loaded. if you've not got your car weight have a look in your area for public weigh bridges, I did my rod at a local steel works with a weigh bridge. best bets to get a tow bar thats got a detachable ball made, don't want to spoil the Mustangs looks or catch your shin, ouch!

An interesting aside on towbars and limits.
Be careful with towbar manufacturers as it can vary the towing limits of the vehicle significantly. For example, I have a Discovery 2 with a factory fitted towbar which has a data plate on it showing a limit of 3500kg which also matches the vehicle data. A chap I know also has a Disco 2 but his has an aftermarket tow bar and that is only plated for 2300kg so, despite what it says on the vehicle data plate, it's really worth checking the tow bar data as well just in case.

The LR factory fitted removable towbar was recalled recently due to more than one of them falling off, some while towing! Corrosion in the socket appears to be the issue, the build-up preventing the removable ball from locking home properly.

That sounds about right to be honest, quality engineering!
Luckily mine's one of the old fashioned shin breakers :smoke:

The persistent rumour about people being fined for towing an empty trailer that's plated higher than the tow vehicles limit was mentioned in another thread. I replied saying that was no longer the case but couldn't find where I'd saved the document, found it now, too big to upload as a PDF here it is as JPEG, hope it's readable.

I've got a copy of the same letter. It is indeed correct BUT only for those with a B+E licence. Those with a B category licence (obtained after January 1997) are governed by plated weights, not actual weights, I also had this confirmed by the National Trailer Towing Association.

I always carry a copy of that letter in the car, just in case "young plod" isn't as aware as the more senior plods!

Update.

As more and more people take their B+E towing test there is something to be aware of. If you hold a manual car licence but take your B+E towing test in an automatic you can only tow with an automatic. Conversely if you only have an automatic licence BUT take your B+E towing test in a manual, your licence will now cover manual transmissions when not towing as well.

Something else worth noting that I’ve just discovered...
I had my licence revoked in March due to a GP giving me incompatible drugs and causing a seizure, when I get my licence back in September I lose all of my grandfather rights to 7.5T and, more importantly for me, towing.

Once I get my licence back I will have to take a towing licence to be able to tow a car trailer which I’ve been doing since 1982! :wanker:

Yep, for some reason when they give people licences back following any suspension SOME people lose their pre-97 entitlements. This has even happened when some change their address when moving. Typically the DVLA refuse to give reasons why when challenged.

They tried that when my uncle turned 70 or had heart problems (can't remember which), he gave up his HGV entitlement and they were going to revoke his 7.5 ton entitlement. He appealed it and after passing a D4 he got it back.

Yep, it's all included in the paperwork that they send you when they confirm that your licence is no longer valid.

Feckin fuming and the GP practice manager knows it!

I wanted to tow a Portafold with my V8 trike. I contacted DVLA & VOSA every time you get a reply from a different person . It was a night air. In the end I had a reply that I was happy with. I carry the email with me now jus Incas I’m stoped. Been to the Isle of Man from Somerset twice now towing the Portafold. No problems. Bottom line is nobody knows 😂😂
