Just had a phone call from a mate who has fallen foul of 8 points system. £10,000 worth of motor now off the road and needing BIVA before getting a new book. He knew nothing about the system and turned his monococque into a convertible. He sent his book off to advise them and ...

The thing is, if you are going to modify a monocoque that much why did you not do your homework first???

Not so much caught as caught out?
How many do though Mark ? Most still amble along believing " it's my car so I can do what I like with it " or " Well it still looks like a .......... so it still is ".

Expensive lesson.

He was a 'mate' of yours - and didn't know about the 8 point system? ;)
Yes, I KNOW !! He's more on the classic side of stuff and mild customs and this was his FIRST major undertaking and didn't think there would be a problem, after all he's not the first to do a convertible conversion, or a pick up ...:( He lives down along the coast a fair way and we only get to catch up in the flesh a couple of times a year . He didn't even know I specialise in this sort of info and we've known each other 20 odd years!!

I have a mate that is into the 4x4 stuff and he didn't know that you can't just shorten the chassis on a Range Rover but is the first person to start quoting building regs when you build a dodgy loft conversion in your house (he's a building surveyor)

It's a pertinent question so I'll ask it ...why does everyone know and abide ( generally) by Building regs etc yet regs relating to the second most expensive asset that most own are totally alien to them ?

They don't! How many people do you know, or have heard about, that have had an extension built, loft converted, oversize outbuilding etc then had a visit and had to undo the work or apply for permission.

Id guess ones common knowledge to anyone with a property and one isnt to anyone with a car.if you speak to anyone regsrding doing say an extension, generally they ask about planning etc.

Just about everyone who comes here asks how i got planning permittion on my size garage(built on building regs) yet no one asks anything about the cars.the normal question you get

Is how do you mot or insure them.

You know the regs as you have become involved with them.you cant expect anybody else to ,even if thry are into cars.just like i wouldnt expect you to know every other law in the country.

Remember years ago it was mentioned in the leaflet thst came with the v5. Now you need to search for it,and thats presuming you know you need to look.

I really dont understand why you cant grasp why people dont know.

Youre mate was unfortunate.if he didnt send his v5 off for a change of body style he could be driving it around.then agsin if he had done the same mods to a chassised car, wouldnt he just off had

An inspection for a body change.

The problem is that when folks try to advise on regulations relating to cars they get shot down in flames and it decends into several pages of arguing because "a man in the pub says it isn't true". I have no time for people openly criticising on here HOW someone approaches the paperwork side of things, what one person decides to do is no-one elses business, (hoping they haven't been fed a load of BS from "the man in the pub"), but the actual regs as they stand should be publicised for those that ask and those that relay this informtaion shouldn't be chastised.

Cos one will let you do what you want within easy framework of rules and one wont?
Expand please Mark ? I think Portlands Pops pass negates that view? Maybe it won't let you run outside of C&U regs to actually pass but then again ,by law, you shouldn't when in actual use.

The Australian system is actually nearer to a Building regs system ( inspection and sign off at various stages of build and no sill radii tests etc to worry about ) It would have been better than IVA but there wasn't enough input at the time because ...wait for it... " It'll never happen" .

Isn't that more they think they'll get away with it Ian ? I'm mean some are overtly trying to get round the rules like the guy who built a new house INSIDE his barn ?
