i think you are meant to use a water pump from an escort as the fins are different as it turns the other way on an escort

I used the original pump off the mondeo and it turns the same way - i just added an idler pulley on other side of motor and turn the water pump off back of belt. It works fine and runs cool.

Taxirod - i ran a 15.2 with it at hrd's with a real soft launch - i only got one run in tho. Its easy got a low 14 in it - and the boost is goin up whilst its off the road and going to get it on the rolling road - because at minute the ignition map is just a rough one done by myself. Would be happy with a low 14 but would love to see it do a 13.

the only mods to the engine for the blower was a de compression plate - home made manifolds and a megajolt ignition system. nothing major - as said its not running much boost at the minute going to up it before it hits the road again to around 8 - 9 psi. I think much more that that and the decompression plate would have to go and some forged pistons would be needed but it starts getting expensive then so the boost will be staying around 8 psi ha.

I like the colour too - i nearly got persuaded to change it this time but its gonna be the same again.

Its detonation that usually kills the cast pistons, which is a function of CR, how efficient your blower is/heats the intake air, combustion chamber shape, a/f ratio (I always shoot for 12:1 afr in a boosted motor), how robust the pistons are to start with etc. Some blowers when pushed hard just start to gain extra pressure by heating the air which is really bad for intake temps and detonation.

Ive ran cast pistons in a bike up to 16psi on ron98 and they survived but it had a really efficient combustion chamber for the use (flat top pistons, small hemispheric chamber and a large squish area) and 8.6:1 static compression, equally ive seen them when its gone wrong and detonated badly and it cracks the ring lands off the piston with the force. When the air was dense on a cool early morning test session you could just begin to detect detonation on wfo, so right on the edge of what was possible. Skirting the eternal abyss, like y'do.

Asbo, are you aware the ST170 focus has forged pistons and rods factory fitted. thicker headgaskets are available to lower compression too. years ago I did a budget 1800 turbo in my mk2 fiesta using a decomp plate. made a cracking cheap power source.
