there's an orange 7 around and also a fantastic black patinaed one with an A series in it and fenderless...can't post pics thogh as I'm at work!!

a midget axle would work well with a 1275 A series, the stock midget box is pretty good even with no syncro on 1st. The only weak point is the thrust bearing ...it's carbon and so disintigrates with no warning but this can be replaced with a mini one with a bit of work.... Yep there are kits to put ford and toyota boxes on the back of the engine but they can be quite expensive.
To be honest keeping it all Austin would be the way I'd go as it really isn't gona need much power to make it scoot down the road. The A series can be made to produce a good bit of power with the stock twin 1 1/2 inch SUs and there's plenty to play with (matched ports, flowed carb, LCB etc) with the stock motor. A single 1 3/4 inch SU can be more efficent but when you get in to serious tuning, big bores (up to 1480 if off set, triumph 2000 pistons, bigger cams etc) a 40mm twin choke is still all you really need!!...
As far as a metro turbo goes...the weak point there was the Diff in the FWD gearbox I had one (oh the shame of it!!) and I have to admit I wasn't that bad power wise (relativly!!LOL) and yeah it did eat a box

But the Austin 7 is an weak cars so if you going to tune up an engine the chassis will need boxing.I had an look at an standerd one at the Steam Rallys i go to and they don`t look very strong

Austin 7!

I,m just about to start on a 1931 short wheelbase Austin 7 box saloon (RL), similar to the American bantam, look at the H.A.M.B. site for some amazing Bantam rods, (just google austin bantam hot rods) will have a bespoke chassis as I will be running a capri 2.0 ltr V4 with a 2000E box, nice short engine with plenty of low down torque, 105E back axle and an old drop tube front thats been kicking around the garage, not enough of these Brit rods about these days! you can pick up a good bodyshell for a few hundred quid if you know where to look. I say go for it :)

boxing the frame goes without question, the springing tends to be quite stiff (as early Fords are) and the frame flexes to compensate for this...weather that is meant to be or weather it's just sumat that happens I have no idea..LOL

Anyone no what i can use for the front axle/steering
If you're going to keep the Austin Seven chassis for this project, whether boxed or not, use the Austin Big Seven front axle, it's much stronger than the standard A7 item. track is a few inches wider than the 40" track standard A7 axle. The Big Seven axle pretty much bolts straight on if you use the matching Big Seven spring. It's reasonably easy to convert to hydraulic brakes too. use a late (37 on) Ruby or Big Seven steering box with this setup for the best steering feel.
