never been down the san diego for any length of time.

when we go we normally stay in Stanton, lots of rod shops about, huntingdon beach is about 15 mins away and theres loads of rod shops down that way as well like - dan fink, foose, California street rods, wheelers etc. etc. all within a 2 min walk of each other. along the road from that is CWMoss, Reids rod parts. , most of the other shops like so-cal, moon, limeworks etc. etc. arent too far away either. just up the coast is seal beach, freak beach - sorry venice beach they arent far away - all good to go and see. derelict donuts isnt too far away either - its all within about a half hour drive of everything.

good shopping - go somewhere like Rancho Cucamonga which is up by the mountains, im sure your wife could spend a week there, its not far from so-cal nor limeworks

disney & knotts berry farm is only 15 mins away from where we stay in Stanton so i guess its good for the kids.

as matt says you will need to do a bit of travelling to see everything - as long as you got sat nav you'll be fine

as for shows look at the http://www.good-guys.com and http://www.nsra-usa.com also http://www.driveonline.com and http://www.socalcarculture.com/

If you're down San Diego way Coronado Island is about the best place to be in my experience.
In LA if I need to stay for a week or more I tend to rent houses usually around Torrance, Long Beach area so you're close to the beaches and easy reach of most of LA and only 40mins from the airport. Renting houses / apartments is brilliant as the kids are not stuck in a hotel room and work out about the same price. If you get time DO go out to the desert, Either Gila Bend, Yuma way or up around Twenty Nine Palms, Joshua tree park.

some addresses for you:

http://www.crafty.f2s.com/CA_Rods.doc

AFAIK all are current.

Corona is a little out of the way but it is definitely worth it to go and see Marcel & Sons. Marcel himself was 80 this year and is still bashing tin, always has a story to share. Opposite is barry whites, so whilst there you may as well take a look - big shop, never seems to be much going on though!

Foose shop worth a visit, but you can only go between 12-1pm, if you use google maps to track down the addresses you'll see there are a few shops within a 5 minute drive, so you can plan a couple of hours down there.
All shops, without exception have always taken the time to show us around and chat about whats new, Troy at wheelers gives you a personal tour of each project they are working on.
A 2 minute walk from Fooses is Lanzinis body shop, hes done some of the overhaulin cars and had his own '33 at Detroit this year, we saw the chassis in January.
Never done hollywood hot rods as they were quite a way over burbank way.

Some pics so you get an idea of what you may see:

Yep I went there at xmas, it's really nice. The place to stay is the suitably named Hotel del Coronada. Look how sunny this place is even in December.

that map is where I nicked the huntington beach addresses  useful though cos you can see the shops that are all close by. Somewhere around there is bill dunns upholstery place too.

The place marked as GMT sheetmetal is, Im told long gone, never looked for it.

The place marked as papake is a guy called bill papkae, apparently he is a ford shoebox nut and has more parts etc for them than anyone else. Never been.

We rent out our upstairs room if your interested, we are in Fountain Valley (which is basically Huntington Beach) we are close to the freeway so you can get about easy, we are about 5 miles from HB pier & beach, and all of the Hot Rod shops in HB. There's the Derelict Donut on Sat morns which is just down the road. So as you can see we have a lot to offer, plenty of local insight. If you are interested then you can e-mail me, [email protected]
