Makes you wonder if those car designers of the late 40's and early 50's had any idea that there designs would be so much admired over half a century later.

Post war Detroit was the birthplace of planned obsolescence. I'm sure the designers cared about making cars that would be admired for posterity but bean counters probably couldn't give a monkeys, sadly. They were more bothered about making buyers excited about the next thing. I'd be willing to bet if the money men didn't have to be involved, and it was all in the hands of the designers the stock Mercuys (and other 50s cars) would look more like that one above, which is utterly gorgeous by the way.
