Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and would like to introduce myself and my new project.

Ive wanted an american car and especially a truck for as long as i can remember so i put my lowrider toyota hilux up for sale and sent Ray @ raysclassiccars an email with my budget and the type of vehicle i wanted.

Shortly after that my hilux sold on ebay and Ray contacted me with a list of stock that met my budget. In the list of trucks Ray sent me they were mainly full restoration/rat trucks with stock suspension brakes engine etc. But there was one truck in the list that was just over my budget but was an ex show truck, with a camaro clip, dropped 10 bolt rear axle, tuned 350 small block, th350 auto trans, custom interior etc etc

So after many exchanged emails with Ray, i scraped together all of my savings plus any cash i could lay my hands on and placed my order in mid december.

Ray was an absolute star to deal with and helped me through the entire import process start to finish.

A few of the pictures that Ray sent me..

Fast forward to late febuary and the truck was ready to collect from southampton docks, so i borrowed a trailer and a tow vehicle and off i went....

Things i need help with-

There is a heater/de mister installed. But no switches wired up, just one single wire coming from behind it? The truck has been 12 volt converted, would i be right in the assumption that the heater will be 6v? If so i assume i'll need some kind of dropper 12v to 6v? How do i wire up a switch or switches to a heater with only one wire coming from it?

The only other problem is that after ive had the truck running and up to temperature then shut it off, it struggles to turn over? I researched into this and read that it could be the starter solenoid getting hot as the exhaust is very close to the starter? I have installed a summit racing starter blanket but this dusnt seem to of cured the problem. Should the starter have its own earth? There isnt one on it but there is an empty terminal at the back of the motor? Is this suitable for an earth?

Help would be much appreciated as i am very new to american vehicles and engines.

Thanks for reading and i will update with my progress as often as i can.

Hey guys,

I had a go at machine polishing the o/s front wing and the hood at the weekend. paintworks not the best, lots of stonechips and california sunburn but i think it has improved slightly.

Before

Stage 1 coarse cut rough pad

Stage 2 fine cut fine pad

Stage 3 nano polish heavy gloss

I used a rotary polisher and farecla g1 and g3 with farecla pads.

bloomin awesome Steve

Lovely looking truck, hope to see it in the flesh someday, not that far away from you, and i've been toying with getting a truck (have messaged Ray a few times - lol)

Once quick question - In the engine bay photos is that a Glass fuel filter i see:

if so, get rid of it and either fit a non glass one, or leave out altogether - assuming there is a filter before the fuel pump that is. Read to many stories of these glass ones breaking in the engine bays and the car going up in flames.

Hey gary,

You your not far from mee, if you ever want to come have a nosey feel free.

Yea its a glass fuel filter, i fitted it temporary so as to see if the fuel tank needed cleaning out.

I.E if the filter filled with crud i was going to remove, empty and clean the tank. But since ive fitted it its spotless inside the filter so will soon be replacing it.

Thanks for the warning though

hi gary the trk is looking good & thanks for the kind words , the starting issue could be the timing it might be a bit off i cant remember the heater is it a stock one or a heater a/c combo unit if its the stocker the one wire will go to a reastat switch & the other side of the switch is the hot wire , but i,m think it had a/c , the guy i bought ti from was a young techy guy that had started a couple of companies & sold them off, he paid a lot of money for the trk & then let it sit in the berkeley hills under a tarp , he was told it was built originally for a nascar driver hence the safety harness & bucket seats but not being a car guy he could,nt remember the name , might be true you never know if i can be of any help in the future parts wise or questions feel free to contact me all the best & happy motoring cheers RAY A in sf

as long as the filter can't flap about and bang on something likely to break it then it'll be fine. where it is i'd suggest a stay bracket for it just to be safe.

Your welcome Ray its Steve by the way lol

I think its a stock heater? the truck has no a/c installed. Would the hot wire from the reastat switch go to a 6v source? Need to google reaststat switch as i have no idea what that is :beuj:

I did attempt to set the timing by following a few guides/videos on youtube etc but whenever i adjusted the timing to the recommended settings the engine died and wouldnt restart unless i adjusted it back to 25 ish degrees i think (ive slept since then)

I have spoke to kev colman at eda engines in castleford where i will be taking the truck for a tune up, timing and carb set up all being well.

I'm sure it would be fine but i now have a fear of my life savings and my garage going up in smoke :sniff: so i have purchased a new Mr Gasket fuel filter to replace it as was only temporary.

Hey guys small update,

I decided to do the remote starter solenoid modification to resolve my slow cranking hot start problems. Whilst i was at it i decided to replace all the starter wiring, alternator wiring, battery terminals and add a few extra earths.

I also had a go at re polishing the very rusty and pitted chrome wheels. I read online somewere that using tinfoil and warm water was good for renovating old tired chrome by inducing a chemical reaction? Seemed a bit far fetched but for 50 pence for a roll of tinfoil i thought i'd give it a shot.

I was absolutely stunned by the results!!!!!!
