after breathing in loads of grinding dust/rust over the last week that have me feeling like i'm loaded with cold till i get it all blown out my nose (who else looks in the hanky/tissue to see whats come down) decided i should really have a face mask to go with my googles i now allways wear when grinding etc after my eye accident. dont want the paper throw away type as in the past i feel all the shit just comes in the sides anyway. but also cant afford a air fed type so something in the middle with replacable filters... also handy if i could paint with it aswell!
what do you guys use?

mate, ive got an old airfed mask here, i used to use it when i painted a lot but dont have any use for it now..
visor could do with a good t-cut but its all there and ready to go!.

On ebay theres a place selling a 2K short duration mask call Gerson 2K Mask. The make up of the mask is fine but I now use 3M masks for paint and use this one for cutting and grinding as the filters aren't available off the shelf like 3M

Maybe something else to consider. Cheapo cutting and grinding discs produce loads more dust than the good quality stuff. Also are you working the grinder to hard ? ie, let the disc do the cutting. For cutting I use the Stainless 1mm Erbauer discs from ScrewFix, much better, less dust and last longer. I rarely use grinding discs now, I much prefer the coarse flap wheels, more expensive but better finish

i used to be the same , until i brought a full face north mask from boc , cost around 60quid and is great for under car work , grinding , sand blasting , full safe vision and filtration. similar to this one on screwfix http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat...HZOCFFQ?productId=54298&imageNo=null&ts=31024

i got pissed off with paper masks and easy to scratch non scratch goggles.

thanks for the offer sid mate but i dont want to be conected to the compresser all the time. just a mask will be fine..... anymore

goggles, face masks... i'll be putting gloves n overalls on next when does this health and safety stuff end

it has a water trap and pressure adjuster on a waist belt.

Would an air fed mask take much air ? I use a clarke 9cfm compressor and in the past tried to 'get away' with the short duration type ebay mask. Never felt really safe but we all take chances now and then [probably stupid of me!]I only ask because the bigger diy compessors only seem to support a decent spray gun with no spare capacity....

if your spraying a car you need a big compressor ... so the mask use wont matter?

if your grinding and dont want to breath steel dust, use an airfed mask through your little compressor....

I always wear eye protection but,must admit,I rarely use a face mask,though I know I should.Allways wear one when grinding stainless or galvanised stuff though.
If you've got a decent supplier for the welding trade nearby,ask them what they recomend.They may even give you a couple of samples to try out.

I Always use fume and particle masks.

welding dangerous shit for years, very high chromium ridden fumes and crap.
Depends how much you want to invest !! Fume for the shit given off during heating galvanised surfaces, dust and particles caused by grinding anything !!

You protect your eyes after incident, only got 2, luckily still there.
Lungs, same ,dont neglect them, i dont know any old welders, wjho were the cool guys when i was younger..

if you cant afford a good air fed full face visor by RACAL, then invest in a Fume/Particle Dust Mask by 3M allowing you to retain the mask section but change out the filters after 100 hours of use (thats probably once a year costing 15 quid) based on working hours.

Its really worth investing in a good mask, long term prevention....
