Hey guys,

Another question...

Looking at buying a 1989 Mustang to rob the running gear off for my gasser project (Thanks for the heads up Jeff )

The motor is an EFI 302ci V8, can the EFI be stripped off and a manifold and carb used instead?

The car in question has an after market MSD ignition system fitted so i guess this runs independant of the EFI so in theory I should be able to keep that to run with the carb?

Thanks in advance!

Matt,

If my memory serves me correctly the injectors are in the inlet manifold on the 80's fords so all you have to do is swap manifolds. If not, you can either plug the heads or get another non efi set.
As your plannming a daily I'd keep the efi. Pete can certainly make it look nice and there are loads of turbo kits avaiable too.
I was thinking about efi for mine but was lured by the huge tunnel ram that's supposed to winging it's way over.

Not sure about the MSD, I'd have thought so. If not, you'd be running coil packs and lost spark system with the ecu etc etc so if it's still got a dizzy then there's no need to worry about crank triggers and things.

Might see you at the weekend, gotta drop in and see Pete at some point.

Brilliant, Cheers for the info Jeff!

Might see you but im off to Stoke on Saturday to sort out the Squire body and chassis and off to Leicester on Sunday to hopefully get that Mustang you sent to Pete. Seemed like a damn good idea and at that kind of price means I get engine, box, prop, axle, front struts possibly, radiator, pedalbox etc etc all for less than I budgeted just for the engine an box alone.

Pete said about keeping the efi as it's going to be a daily, but I wasn't so sure on the idea, I suppose its how tidy we can make it look. If there was any way to make it look like a hilborn injection set up then I'll be happy 8)

Catch you soon

Not positive but you may
need to replace the distributor to a non-EFI one.

If you do make sure or change it from bronze to
steel gear to be compatible with a roller cam. A complete MSD distributor and box could also be used as a step up from the factory stuff.

check the MSD site to see what is compatible with efi/carb setups.

Damn, just read the post, cheers for the offer Guy!

Well my report of Leicester is its one cold place, almost as cold as Stoke but not quite!

Started the weekend with nothing and ended it the owner of 100e escort estate body/chassis and a 1989 mustang donor car!

Cheers all, probably going to run the efi system for a year or two as its an everyday car / occasional run what you brung. But will make it plug in and play with the idea of having a second set up with new inlet, carb etc for the summer months.
