Howdy,

OK, I got Capri 2.8i front struts (245 vented) with 5 stud billet hub conversions.

The calipers hit the hub as it's a lot thicker than stock. Already sent them back and had them trimmed back but the calipers still don't friggin go on.

I'm right outta cash so need to resolve this as economically as poss and put monster brakes on after the recession! :wanker:

I don't want to talk to the hub supplier again, just want to move on.
So having the hubs tweaked again (by them) aint an option.
Although there is still an awful lot of metal there.

The Tech question is what 'upgrade' will give the best braking?

I'm looking at swapping out the calipers for 4 pot W*lwoods.
They look slimmer and don't obviously have the single large central piston each side
(which the stock does and it's that that's hitting the hub)

OR

Get a large disk conversion to 280mm which retains the stock calipers and a simple bracket shifts the caliper out that extra 20mm

So, will 4 pot calipers on 245 discs OR 2 pot calipers on 280 discs (more leverage alledgedly) work better?

cheers
KJ

I've found the only people that really know what they're talking about is Caprisport - Google 'em...

They're a club so you'll have to join - not mega dear though TBH...

But be warned Neil doesn't suffer fools gladly - he's a clever bloke that's worked out the most cost effective way of using standard - ish components

There is always the M16 princess caliper option with a widening hit (make it yourself).

They are 4 pot and both can be bought on ebay, direct fit and allow vented discs too

'm doing the same as you, I ended up buying a wilwood set up at great expense (for various reasons) from Peter LLoyd rallying. Again, incredably knowledgeable and helpful, google and give him a bell

ive manufactured numerous brake conversions and billet hubs, HA viva, cortina and even some jap stuff. if you want the hubs modifying let me know, i can take them down as small as i make mine (i know they are safe as they were properly stress tested) the other calliper option is the later ford sliding caliper, it only has 1 piston so will clear the hub no problem, we use these on the viva conversion and it works well with capri vented disks.

Depends on caliper mounting bolt pitch, I think the Volvos would fit Mk2/3 (from memory) but they certainly don't fit in place of M16 calipers ( like Capris etc ) ,got the tear stained T shirt.

Thanks for replies!

have you used all capri stuff x member etc
Yeah, got the whole caboodle and massaged it all on. Didn't want to get involved in setting up geometry etc.

Here's some pics of the situation...

You can see with the caliper touching the hub the holes are maybe 10mm out.

Looking at it, there is a load of meat there but even with a chunk turned off of the mitred edge it looks like the cap heads would then protrude and possibly hit the caliper :sniff:
I'll try and get some accurate measurements and to confirm one way or the other. May take you up on the machining! Can you pm a price on turning them down? cheers

They do look good! but would still have to have the hubs machined.

i cant see why they have used cap heads instead of press in studs, all my hubs use press in studs and the flange is quite a lot thinner than yours. maybe the way to go is reduce the thickness and counterbore the holes for the heads to sit lower. as for price i can guarantee to be cheaper than the competition as its not a business for me just a hobby thats gone out of control:D
