Quite easy really, it removes the automatic upshift / down shift feature of the transmission. You have to change gear, this in effect lets you choose at what RPM you shift. The reverse pattern puts 1 where D would be and 3 where 1 would be. Not 100% but the only reason I could ever work out why this was done is that it is much easier to pull back a shifter when under exteme acceleration and strapped firmly in the seat, was for me anyway.
Not all are the same, some will give you engine braking on the down shift and some won't (not good for street use) I used to use Turbo Action valve bodies, very good. They are also used with other mods to make the clutches engage harder etc.
Been a long time since I did anything with them, but thats how I remember it.
