I seem to remember the original Airfix kits were in a clear plastic bag with a paper folded over the top which was also the assembly instructions? I used to get mine from Woolworths in Leytonstone when I was a kid. They were 1s 6d at the time! These are the ones I remember..MK1 Cortina in white,Rapier in Grey,MK2 Zodiac in dark green,Frogeye Sprite in Pale blue,Mini in red. Does anyone remember anymore? Im not sure whether they did a 105e. I remember going into woolworths many times waiting for them to have a MK1 Cortina back in stock. We used to use the bodies mounted onto scalextric chassis and add big arches etc!We ran them on Airfix grey plastic slot car track.
We upgraded to Scalextric track ,and my older brother bought a 1/24 willys coupe and the 'lil' red wagon kit, plus a stingray kit. The bodies were placed on brass chassis with sidewinder motors and foam slicks. We ran the track as a drag strip layed out in our hallway as it was the only area of the house long enough to set it up! ,and the cars actually pulled wheelies with the swing arm pickups! All heady stuff in those days! We would play an LP of drag racing sounds that he got hold of, recorded at one of the American strips.About this time I was taken to Santa Pod ('65 (or '66?) drag fest, and I've been hooked on drag racing eversince! Cruising in my Bro's Pop or his Y Type (both rodded ) we were king 'o' the hill!! There were very few guys in to this type of stuff then in our area.
Another kit I remember my bro' building was 'lil' coffin . He also built several of the Ed Roth kits.Revell had some nice 1 32 kits out at the time ,and they were BOXED.AND had chrome bits!.oh yeah! really posh! I remember building an MGB Roadster. As I recall the 1 24 scale kits seemed quite large to me as a kid of 11 yrs old...cant see the bloody details on 'em nowadays tho'!!!
Sorry to ramble.......

Never knew Woolworths selling these kits-was abit before my time i guess-i did get a Merc sports car kit-

and a 30s Rolls Royce as a birthday or christmass presant--i shortened the body and put Corgi F1 racing car rear wheels on the back of the rolls and painted it metalflake dark blue.
The only other Brit kits i remember seeing was the three custom kits in a toy shop in Benfleet high road...

Airfix also did an HA Viva
There you go...

The Viva was re-issued back in 2006 in a box set>"Classic car collection" which included the Truimgh Herald and MK1 Escort.
So it could be interesting if any of the other molds where still about and some of these great models mentioned could be re-released.

There was Richardsons of Hadliegh,on the A13,Essex-oposite to where Lidles is now-they stocked mainly Monogram.

Another shop on the A13 just down the road near Lea Elms Pub,sold MPC,Monogram.Just cant remember the name of the shop now?

Lamberts of Ilford.A guy who worked there had a blue late 70s Camaro.

Model shop in Southend Victoria shopping centre-on the top floor.Had a cabinet with biult weathered truck models!

You dident have to go far to find a model shop then-try finding one now.
