Hello

I bought the old 40 below drag car and am trying to get it ready for the hotrod drags. Both front struts are leaking and I thought they were escort/Capri as they are 4 by 108. But noticed last night they have a bolt on botttom ball joint and a weird rebuildable oil filled shock.

Can you help me identify they and where I can buy a set of top seals to stop them leaking?

If the seals are not to damaged, they should have the size on them, so you can go to a bearing company or search on line to find a supplier, much easier than trying to find the original manufacturer.

Even if there are no numbers on the seal take them, the housing and the shaft to the bearing dealer they normally can match them up.

most 60's fords had the bolt on the bottom bit, they could be mk1/2 cortina, corsair, consul capri/classic etc etc. gaz may have 'sealed' inserts for them, they're almost certainly shorter than stock and that's their bag so worth a call.

I'm sticking with hunter- the front flange is fairly distinct. They might be swapped left and right though, cos the only other picture ref I could find shows the steering arm behind, and the caliper out front.
This ref says 'early struts up to '73 ' - this is Sunbeam Rapier, but I'm guessing same.

Thankyou for the replies, I believe they are hill man Hunter now as the pcd is the same as Ford and the steering rack also appears to be hillman

I am currently waiting for a reply from Gaz to see if they can rebuild or re valve them but I will also try and see if I can find any seals.

I am also considering changing to an escort or strange based system as the current bottom arms bind up after 2” of suspension travel due to a design flaw . So if I have to remake the bottom arm it’s not too much of an issue to change the uprights. Which both new options then allow easier upgrade to 5 x 4.75 hubs.

But neither is going to be cheap and I am running out of time to try and make it to the hotrod drags.

sounds like seals from your local bearing supplier is the 'for now' cure. then look into swapping the entire setup when you have more time.
