ive got a pinto I bought many moons ago from a guy at wheels day. just getting round to freshening it up before I pop it in the missus mk1 escort. however I have no idea where or what it came from and buying parts is becoming a pain as I don't have reg number etc etc. basically is there a easy solution to finding where it came from?
also can anyone recommend a good book to help me rebuild it? never played with a pinto really

First thing is what number is cast into the block and you can date the engine by checking out the engine number on Burtons site.

so it looks like ML making it a sept 72. any idea if I can tell what it was in? and also are the engine code normally piss poorly stamped?

I got told it was a 2.1 but aren't they all. I know service items should be fine but what about the head gasket?
anyone suggest a manual apart from a Haynes. im gagging to get it stripped down but wont know how to put it together!

you will be able to measure the cylinder bore to work out what size the engine is

I think They made 4 engine sizes in the Pinto range? I'm sure the Main number is under the exhaust outlet for number 2 piston on the side of the block. Most people prefer the 205 block if ya gonna spend time and money on it. There's a feature in Retro Ford magazine about them building a large bored out and ported/big valved Pinto that could give u some ideas. Scott

Head gasket is same across the range. It'll be Cortina Mk3 or Capri , I'm not sure if Transit were using them in low compression form back then, I don't think so. Haynes manual will work just fine for rebuilding a normal Pinto. If you want to look at tuning stuff then David Vizards is still the standard reference book.

Look at the cambelt cover to see what number is stamped in there to tell you if it's a 2.0 or 1.6.

cheers guys, im pretty sure its got 205 on the case but I never got the cam cover with the engine.
number I found was stamped on a raised square on the front right hand side between the castings for the front or middle engine mounts

not going to uprate it at all. just want a solid clean lump. sticking with the twin choke weber it came with and a 4-1 manifold rather than the cast one
should be plenty of poke in a 2dr mk1 escy, luckily I bought all the rs2000 bits a few years back before prices rocketed.
if I start uprating it now ill get too involved. plan is freshen it up so its ready to go straight in.

getting rather sick of bodywork at the minute so thinking its time to look into the engine, plus I keep whacking my shins on it as its under my workbench!

Think you'll find it has 201 on the block rather than 205 . With no belt cover have a look at the distance between the top of the water pump and the top of the block where the head meets it. I'm not positive that it applies to the Pinto but all other Ford 4s the water pump is flush with the block on the smaller displacement and has about 1" of block above the water pump if the bigger ( longer stroke) version.

I cant find 205 or 201 on the block so must has been hallucinating!

just starting my shopping list of parts as I just realised its been over 10 years since I bought it!
gonna change head gasket, cam belt, water pump and spraybar at a minimum. ill check it all over for wear n tear

im sure ill have more inane questions once its in bits
