What is considered to be the ideal distance between the frame rails in the engine bay of a car that is going to be fitted with a smallblock engine ? The car in question is a 100e that will have ifs and a Chrysler 360 fitted was thinking of keeping it narrow so I can run the haeders over the main rails in order to have the exhaust exit just in front of the rear wheels through the sill. What are your thoughts ?

Work out where everything will fit before deciding. You know the width of the engine and box, headers going out over the rails makes sense so long as you can make the ifs fit and don't forget to check where the steering column will have to be.
