ive bought/am buying a project that has these fitted. im trying to get some info on them, but it seems theres an awful lot of rumour and internet untruths about these axles out there, plus the van certianly had a bit of an identity crisis over the years, so tracking down what parts fit what can be tricky. so i thought we could maybe try to pin down the facts all in one place?

first internet truths i think i can debunk- at no time where they ever the same as a salisbury axle, or a landrover one. i believe the correct designation is a BMC C-type axle, and it wasnt fitted to any other vehicle.

first, dimensions. do they only come in one width, and if so what is it, hub face to hub face.
bolt pattern is 5x5". this mean you can get your hands on solid steels in 15"(sherpa), 16"(taxi), and 17"(early rover) quite easily.
ratios, i believe theres two available, 4.7:1 and 3.9:1?
power rating- it seems people run these on cars up to 300bhp with no problems?

next, rear brakes. from what i can gather, all single wheel models should use this brake drum. if you know of a different size one, let me know!
these are to fit the rear axle of single wheel variants-
Internal Diameter 228mm
Overall Height 84mm
Braking Surface 56mm

to fit vehicles-
LDV 200 Series- 1985 - 1994
LDV 300 Series- 1985 - 1989
LDV Pilot- 1994 onwards
LDV Sherpa 200/300- 1980 - 1985

the rear brake slave cylinders are 20.3mm bore, and are sided.
the shoes are a bit of an issue as theres at least 3 different types listed, but all with the same diameter, thickness and slave cyl, so it must be the handbrake mech or mounting hardware that differentiates them?

front brakes and spindles- what year did they go from drum to disc?
for discs, i believe theres two types. solid disc for full production period, then a vented disc came in in 84, for v8 equipped models.
solid disc- 276mm X 14.3mm, total height 53mm
pads for solid- 105mm long, 75mm tall, 18mm thick.

vented-275mm X 24mm total height 63mm
pads for vented-126mm long, 71.2mm tall, 18mm thick.

i know that there's at least 3 different types of master cyl for the braking system, two 2-pipe ones, and a 3-pipe one.

please add your experiences with axles on this thread, in the hope it will help other rodders out that are using these axles.

Sherpa have 14" wheels, not 15s, don't think they had 3.9 diffs either.

i have a pair of 15" steels kicking round that i got with a sherpa axle, and assumed they were the originals? obviously theres a lot of american stuff on 5x5 to rob 15" wheels off though.

they definately did a 3.9 diff option though. came from the diesels i think.

dez, the 15"s are likely to be P4 'auntie' rover I reckon, as that's where I got my pair from!
- the sherpas I have come accross have all been on 14" steels

The Commer vans had 15" wheels, will fit a sherpa axle. Humber hawk/snipe wheels are similar I believe. Sherpas were always 14" in the era we are interested in.

Never ever seen a 200 series fitted with a a V8. It was the bigger and wider 400 series that was fitted with the Rover V8 for police use and maybe ambulance too.
So what was the 300 series ? Was it a 200 or a 400 by another name???

the 300 was the old Freight Rover version before it became the Leyland DAF 400 and then the LDV Convoy. So, the 300 is the bigger wider version that the cops had the V8 in. It was made from 1984 to 1989.

I realise this is a very old post, but for those looking for information: Leyland Sherpas and Freight Rover 200/230/255 didn't have 3.9 diffs. If they exist they probably came in with the R380 gearbox and or the 1.9 pug engine.

The Leyland and Freight Rover Diffs are:

Pre chassis 64024 with straight halfshaft splines
DAM 4642 - 4.8
DAM4643 - 5.125
Post 64024; involute splines
DAM4466 - 4.8
DAM4467 - 5.125
These would be the 1.8 B-series diesel and petrol engines

The 2.0L Petrols and possibly still the 1.8 Diesel in the 200/230/255 Freight Rovers had:
DAM4469 - 4.375
DAM4468 - 4.875

The Crown/pinion sets seem to be interchangeable as the early and late 4.8s are both ATC7374 and 5.125 are ATC7396
4.375 C/P is DAM3952
and 4.875 is DAM3120

There was also an early petrol Sherpa185 diff, and a Limited slip Diff with the 4.875 ratio.

The main casings and axle is the same (or compatible ) for all of these, but the differential casing changed when the splines changed.

All of the diffs are listed with E or N options, and unfortunately I don't know why, as they are listed for the same vehicles.
