Prob been covered before but, am I right in thinking I could pull a car out of a hedge that's been there years, get it running insure it and hey presto instant classic car.
I know myself there is police laws to abide too but surly this must mean there are unroad worthy cars being driven and sold to people who want an old car but have no knowledge about them. This seems crazy also how long before old cars will need a specialist test that will be tougher than an mot with stupid rules making them unusable.

That is correct and possible. However if pulled over it still has to meet MOT standards and C&U regs , it just doesn't have to go for the test NOT that is is exempt from complying.

Why not leave it as it was so you know if your car will need bushes etc.

...because it was decided that it was 'too much red tape' to take a 'well maintained and rarely used vehicle ' for an MOT ONCE A YEAR. You CAN still take your car for MOT if you disagree with the exemption.

I think I will keep taking cars for an mot and I agree with what you said,, but I think if the worst happens ie an accident, the insurance will worm their way out anything although they will know the car is exempt and someone whether its vosa, police or any other person will find a fault with the car in question, especially if the driver is young. Im not having a go or any thing just my opinion. The only reason I bought it up is there are so many barn/garage finds about at the moment and they all state drive away tax and mot exempt which may deem unsafe.

They will only ever stand a chance of 'wriggling out' if any fault found was likely to have caused the incident. There have been and still are many,many classes of vehicles on the road which have always been MOT exempt. It hasn't managed to wipeout mankind just yet... As usual, there will be a small amount of idiots who will choose to use the rules to drive something on the road that's not fit for purpose, but I suspect that on the whole, these rules will not change a thing, as the majority will choose to do the right thing.

A pre MOT would be a good alternative, an independent checklist with advisories. At least you would be seen to be making regular attempts at compliance.

In fact it is worth a reminder that even with an MOT you can still be pulled and done for a vehicle in a dangerous condition that does not meet the MOT standards and Construction and Use regs.
A twelve month MOT is only really a certification that states the vehicle complied at the time of the test,you could in fact for example have something fly up and cut a flexi brake hose or a tyre side wall on the way home from the test station,unlikely i know ,but there are 364 more days and thousands of miles to go before the next test.

too true, a few years ago I was driving my HGV away from it's annual test at the VOSA HGV station, when I got hit with a brick flying out from a tipper's rear tyres and wrecked my windscreen!

Re MOT's ... I never understood why the government made classic car MOT free with the reasoning people look after those cars !!!!!! ... With money grabbing politicians I noever understood that one or the free vehicle tax (not complaining about that one)

I've had a couple of cars MOT free but always chose to MOT them for the simple reasoning that as good as I maintain my cars, I can always miss something and at least it is pointed out. If a car is safe then it will pass anyway. Then there are the few who take advantage to drive their cars regardless of condition.. But that is just my personal opinion.

But here is the crunch ... your car should be up to MOT standar all the time anyway and God help you in an accident if it is not .... how much would that cost.

My garage here does MOT's for £38 (Arrow Brook Motors) .... who says you have to fix everything...just do the safety stuff ...cheap MOT then but knowing the car is safe to drive

It a personal choice and risk though at the end of the day ... MOT for me everytime for peace of mind as I know my cars are up to scratch

I'm glad the tax is freee though as it is only tax and my cars do tend to have big engines ....what a saving..happy days
