I need to cut an inch off each side or rack,is this straitforward ie cut then put another inch of thread on bar,any metal treatment involved

most steering rack's iv been involved with have the thread's rolled on, which means the threaded part is fatter, when you try to thread it futher down the bar is to thin, measure the threaded part and compare the thickness an inch or so futher down

Its off mk 2 escort,ive been told today that the threads been rolled on the bloke said the only way is to cut the thread off completly and rethread whats left but then its going to be to narrow. Theres about inch and half of thread i only wanted to cut it down by an inch each side[what is the safest amount of thread you need in the track rod end.the other thing i was thinking of is you can buy rack extensions,should i cut rack right down and rethread the end to accomadate these to my required length or should i cut and shut with sleeve

I think you will find rack extentions will be same thread as the track rod ends. You could cut and sleeve as you said but you need to be preety sure of you welding. You could make your own rack extentions. Were are you bassed

i would nt attempt welding such an important part of a car[car valeter 26 yrs and bloody good at it ]why do you ask where im bassed,is it something you could sought for me[redies]
