Would anyone care to explain how radius rods, hairpins and ladder bars work? I understand a four link system as the parallel links keep the axle from rotating as it moves up but with the other systems it looks like the axle has no choice other than to rotate as it moves. Is it just considered acceptable for the type of vehicle they are usually found on, ie rods, and the limited suspension travel that is expected from these set ups?

You are right.
One fixed point means the axle will scribe an arc around that point. Most rodders make the bars as long as possible which limits the movement as the effective arc is larger.

basically yes, the length of them means a very large radius so with the limited travel on most rod suspensions the 'arc' is negligible
