My youngest phoned me to say his car had stopped as he pulled into a street near me it is a 900cc 51 plate Corsa.

When I went to it I found the oil low just below half, and when I started it up there was a bad metal knocking noise so I towed it home.

As the noise was quite fast on tickover I thought maybe tappets or cams so pulled the rocker cover off and this is what I found.

My question is whether this type of wear on the two cam lobes and following rollers would make the nasty rattling.

Usual problem is the timing chain rattling its nuts off.It has an oil filled tensioner aswell,so low oil wont help.In general they arent long livers,i yours is shot i do have one here on the key if needs be.
Have to agree, everyone I MOT seems to have a rattling tensioner...!
