I know that optimum braking performance is given by vented discs, but if converting a 9" from drums to discs, would solid discs be suitable for a street driven car? I'd guess that they are going to be better than the drums. The problem is that Sierra rear calipers for vented discs are expensive, then by the time I've added in a rebuild kit, discs, caliper brackets etc, I'm out of money! 2WD Cosworth calipers for solid discs are a lot cheaper.

The reason I'm not staying with drums is that one is cracked & all the brake hardware inside the drums are missing. The car is a 57 Ranchero with a stock 302.

Most of the braking is done by the front, so solid discs on the rear gets my vote too.

Thanks. Anyone know if all Sierra rear calipers are the same (apart from the solid/vented differences)? I've been beaten on three pairs on EBay so far so I'm going to visit a few breakers yards to see what they've got & want to know if there's any differences in calipers.
