No it's not. It's the number of bolts holding the crown wheel to the diff.

Not saying you're wrong mate but ,just checked and 10 bolt rear has 10 bolts in rear cover,12 bolt has 12.

Both the answers above are correct but the term 10 or 12 bolt rear does actually refer to the number of bolts holding the crown wheel to the carrier .
A quick way to tell at a glance if you look under the back of a car ; a 10 bolt in all it's variations always has a cover bolt in the centre at the bottom , i.e. the 6 O'clock position , on a 12 bolt you'll see 'em at 5 & 7 O'clock .
