Imagine getting caught behind a platoon as it overtakes another going uphill on a dual carriageway ......

I think the future of freight transport happened back in the 60s and 70s, with BR's Freightliner. (Nostalgia ain't wot it used to be, ya know? ;) ) Truck to local depot, onto rail to be shunted to a train heading towards the destination, hauled overnight to the destination nearest the depot, truck from depot to drop-off.

Of course, that requires having rail-links that weren't torn up and sold off for scrap, and whatnot. But when you consider how much a single train can haul, and how many trucks it'd take to replace that one train, it works out pretty well. And it isn't perfect; all it takes is one signalling failure...

...having said that, signalling failures are a bit more of a rarity than some twonk ploughing into the central reservation on the M60, and holding up traffic all over the North West again.
