General curiosity question from me.

I am from Australia where the Vauxhall brand disappeared from our market in the mid 1960s - Later model Vauxhalls are a mystery to me.
I have seen details about the Vauxhall "Slant 4" family of engines but never actually seen one of these engines "in the flesh"

Does anyone here own or has owned a vehicle powered by one these engines?
Are these engines easy to work on or modify?
Are they used to repower or update earlier model Vauxhalls?
I believe their main motorsport application was in Circuit Racing although I have seen a photo of a Chevette drag car powered by this style of engine.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Slant 4? I'm presuming you are talking about the engines used in the FD Victor , Bedford CF and then the larger version transplanted into the HC Vivas and Firenza in 2.3 form?

I used to own a 1600 FD Victor with the Slant 4 in it many years ago. They were never really that popular as an engine to modify but the 2.3 version would make the Firenza hustle along. Never really popular as a transplant as they were very wide and if you could get one in then a V8 was a better choice. In fact many FDs ended up repowered by Rover V8s due to th wider engine bay.

Hi KangaRod, these SOHC engines were used to power Victors /Vivas/ Bedford Cfs, they ranged from 1600 cc up to 2300 cc they were tuned by Bilstien for Vauxhall and the droop snoop Firenza gave reasonable BHP.

Lotus used this bottom end and put a twin cam head on it as used in the Jenson sports car.

As Kev said they were a wide engine and I believe its basically 1/2 a V8 that never went into production (a prototype was made )

Hope this helps as its from old cloudy memory

Cheers

Dave 62 BP , BLYDENSTEIN Bill I seem to remember was his first name, tuned these engines for Vauxhall in the day, some brave souls even enlarged this lump to 2500 cc but were prone to cracking bores/ sleeves.I worked in a main dealer when the Vauxhall VX 490 was in production with the 2300SOHC that had twin Stromberg carbs on them. Quite a nice car in its day and trouble free when new/ fairly new.VBOA - History

Had a Panther Lima (small volume, specialist British sports car) powered by a tuned one of these in twin carb 2.3 form. A bit of a weighty motor that didn't like to rev' but gutsy low down. A few of the guys in the club had some extremely well sorted examples pushing out over 200 brake. As mentioned Blydenstein and D.T.V. (Dealer Team Vauxhall) were the places for tuning kit. There was even a factory turbo kit but the one I knew of melted its pistons on a regular basis - was bloody quick when it was running tho'...

very tuneaable back in the day,ran a few in vauxhall magnums etc,if i remember exhaust manifold could be a bit aof a scrat to get to.
they were actually half of a v8 that never made production:

Thanks for the picture of the prototype V8 engine.
Hard to find any information on it on the Internet.

Great to see that Vauxhall slanted to engine to the left, away from the steering gear, in a RHD vehicle.
In Australia we had the Chrysler Valiant with a Slant 6 engine. The engine slanted to the right and covered the steering gear in a RHD vehicle. The engine and the car were based on the US Plymouth Valiant which was designed as a LHD vehicle.

Had a few over the years and not a bad engine at all: easy to work on and pretty reliable. The sportier ones around 120hp I believe. They had a neat system to adjust the OH cam clearance using tapered screws rather than shims.

Very interesting to see the V8 version.
