Which in your opinion would be better suited under my 50. Mercury? I'm after drivability longevity and ahem economics. Ok screw the economics it will be v8 after all but I'm hoping to put her on LPG.

The parts I currently have are....

Current stock set up
405 ford v8 60's lump (tho may now be 351w ford v8 70's lump dont ask how i got confused.)
Box mated to above could be cruise o matic ?
350 Caddy v8 79 with th400
Rear caddy L.s.d axle with discs and anti roll bar.

Looking to lower substantially using jag Xj front clip.

What is a 405 lump? - overbored truck engine?

302/ 5.0 with overdrive auto. Dont make yourself loads of work with the jag clip, just use dropped spindles and discs.

Fat fingers on an i-phone lol ment to read 406 tho I could be mistaken at that, I bought it some time ago now and cant remember the finer points. Might be a 6.7 litre V8? Its a 1960's ford mercury engine. I keep meaning to have a look at the castings and codes.

X2, Injected smallblock/overdrive trans would be good for mileage & easy to maintain,

Appreciate the input.


From what i am aware, using the jag front clip will lower the car substantially and give me 295mm front disc brakes and using the caddy rear axle would give me 280mm discs on the rear. While i understand Fitting the jag front clip may not be easy, I was thinking it would accommodate air easier than the current stock set up?

The compromise will be 5x118 stud pattern on the rear and 5x120.65 on the front. I can easily see how easily the air set up will work on the jag clip and i can build it up or at least prep it to take the air prior to fitment. I can't remember how the mercury front set up looks will have to poke my head under the front again.

The caddy back axle is also l.s.d. Tho not yet discovered the ratios and whether it is a worthy transplant or not yet. Although the Th400 gearbox i currently have was mated to it. As for overdrive, I'm interested to know/learn about anything more suitable to modern driving. I am after a bit more go to go with the show. Don't get me wrong, I love the flat head and the nostalgia that comes with it but I'm trying to be practical as i live in Yorkshire and would like to do more miles. Hayride etc.


Both the front jag clip and the caddy rear axle come with pretty heavy duty anti roll bars. Granted this is all equipment that is in front of my face so i can easily see the benefits but I'm aware that doesn't mean there the best items to suit my project, I'm sure there is plenty more suitable that I'm just not aware of. That's why I have opened it to discussion on here

Ok so i did a little research today from the casting numbers on my engine and a I.D. site my engine might be a 351 Windsor. I'm new to V8's So not 100% sure as of yet so if any one can shed some light on where else to look for numbers on the engine to help? I have just gleamed the information to date from other websites. Block casting is C6ME. Inlet manifold has 8 bolts which from info i have read makes it a later engine? Probably de-tuned to suit emissions market? It has a single carb. It also has the windsor style fuel pump. The valve covers have Mercury script pressed into them.

iv got discs from P.O.L and air from air ride tecknology for my stock front end, both are proper kits to weld and bolt on.
but as already said you could also go for the drop spindles,

I thought about the dropped spindles but I still want to beef up the front end to handle the weight of a bigger engine. I'd love to stick to the flat head but getting it to perform as well as I would like and do the kinda miles I want to be able to do reliably I don't believe to be viable at the mo. I have a full air set up from a 51 mercury shelved at the mo Along with a digital airride tech system to go with it. I also have a number air bags and air shocks. Is it unwise to replace springs and dampners with air items? Is it better to do one or other?

if you are refuring to the rear springs the kit iv got says to remove all but 2 leafs then add the air bag above, this must locate the axle adequately.
but i will be adding an aditional panhard rod for sidways motion
iv been in my mates buick that has air all round and i was impresed with how it handled the bends, it didn't boat around

If its a 400M your best off using it to stop a boat floating away. If you want economy and a cheap instal go for a cut out 305 with a TH350 and put that on lpg. Sell the ford engine (once you know what it is) and use the money to rebuild the 305.

Yes its a boring sb chevy TH350 combination but thats what was asked for. The best option that incorporates a V8 with economy.

51 mercs had flatheads in them, no need to beef up the front end for another v8 - flatheads weigh about 585lb which is probably a little more than a sbc and about the same as a sbf... no need to put an axle with disks on the back either, they will be overkill, an axle with drums will be fine on there.

Sbf is quite abit lighter (50lb's or so) than a Flathead, sbc normaly a tikle heavyer, a 390 is prolly up to 100lb heavyer. Cant see from the pic what the engine is, realy need to uncover yours an get some pics.

Pics of specific area's? I have found the cast number as posted above C6ME. Inlet manifold appears to bolt side ways into the heads at a 45 degree angle rather than straight down Stat? or Water inlet enters through front of block next to dizzy rather than on top. Exhaust manifolds are cast and look like a single block 4 into one not cast to look like pipes 4 into one.

If its a 390 ford it wont be a TH400 behind it.
