1)We have just taken on a contract at work to maintain and which involves driving whats called a tug, now basically this is a small H.G.V lorry with a 5th wheel that tows trailers around the docks, the roads are for public use but on private land, they are not taxed or m.o.ted so dont go on the main road, now we have been told that because its got a 5th wheel we might need a H G V licence to drive them, does anybody on here no the law on this ?

2)Also there is a 7 and half ton lorry with a tacho road legal, now if we have to drive this back to our depot for maintance purpose only do we have to use the tacho ?

3)They also have transit mini buses with tachos, again for maintance purpose do we have to uses the tachos to take them back to the depot also ?

Thanks......:?:

Depending on their use and what is being moved, you might also need Operating Licences from Vosa.

You will probably find the Tugs will be registered as 'Special Types' on the log book.
If they are, you dont need an HGV licence.

Not sure on tacho's for the 7.5ton lorry.

If the trucks have tachos you need to use them if used on the road. You can drive a 7.5 tonne truck on car licence if over 21 and passed test before 1997 I think. If the mini buses have more than 8 seats you need a pcv licence and any truck over 7.5 tonne you need a hgv licence.

No , you don't need an HGV Class 1/LGV C+E to drive a dock tug within the confines of the dock (I presume you're talking about Southampton ?) . The dock is a controlled area and only open to authorised public use not general , so effectively you're not driving on a public highway and therefore do not need a licence . Some training would be handy though , they can be awkward buggers to drive .

No , as its not being used for hire or reward , but it doesn't hurt to throw one in anyway . Obviously you need to check your licence covers you to drive a 7.5 ton truck , they changed the rules a while ago limitting car drivers to a max of 3.5t on a car licence .

No , see above . But beware that if the minibus is full of your co-workers the old bill will see that as hire or reward so play it safe and chuck a card in if you're loaded .

Hope that helps :smoke:
